Here is the story:
Helicopter horror.. Peters' hubby dies in crash
Tragedy struck Broadway sweetheart Bernadette Peters this week when her husband, Michael Wittenberg, was killed in a helicopter crash in Montenegro.
Wittenberg, a 43-year-old investment adviser, was on a business trip Monday when the chopper crashed, killing him and three other people, a spokeswoman for Peters said yesterday.
The Tony-winning actress married Wittenberg in July 1996 at the home of her longtime friend Mary Tyler Moore.
The story of how the couple met is as romantic as an old-fashioned Broadway love story.
The glamorous star was standing in front of her building on the upper West Side. She was formally dressed, waiting for a ride, when Wittenberg, who lived nearby, walked past wearing a tuxedo. He jokingly asked if she was ready for a night out together.
Peters laughed, and pointed out he was missing a button on his jacket. "I'd sew it on if I had a needle and thread," she said. He ran to a nearby tailor shop and got the needed items. Peters stitched him back together and they went their separate ways.
At some point during the night, the button fell off Wittenberg's coat. He put it and a card with his phone number in an envelope and left it with her doorman.
The couple had no children, but shared a passion for animals, and had two pets, Stella, a pit bull, and Kramer, a mixed terrier.
Peters, who took part Sunday in a benefit concert for the victims of Hurricane Katrina at the Gershwin Theater, is one of Broadway's most beloved stars. She won Tonys for her work in "Song & Dance" and "Annie Get Your Gun," and has appeared in such films as "The Jerk" and "Pennies From Heaven."
But the Queens-born, 57-year-old performer most savored her offstage role as a wife. She once told an interviewer that for her, marriage is "a secure, rooted place.... I've never worked as much since I've been married, taking risks and doing things."
Funeral plans have not been announced.

My mom's friend was his cousin. It really is so sad. They were an amazing couple, both the nicest people you could meet.

my dad had michael as a student (6th grade) and stayed close friends to his parents
his parents are terrific people - they were at my wedding
it's such a horrible story
