Health Insurance
My DH owns his own business and I am currently a substitute teacher like many others hunting for a job. Does anyone have any advice/info on what we can do about health insurance???? Thanks!

Re: Health Insurance
hmm... well.. my parnets own their own business and i know they got insurance directly through an insurance company ( i think they have aetna)... they deduct it as a business expense. its expensive..... its only the two of them on there ( they don't have any full time employees) and i beleive they pay like 8 or 10K a year for it... AND they have like a $50 co pay... but it can be done, i think most insurance companies have small business plans... good luck!!

Re: Health Insurance
i am a self insurer - i also have aetna. i'm not going to kid you it isnt cheap and aetna prices you based on health. i pay for a single policy ( just me ) almost $1,000 a month, but i have some serious medical issues. they do have individual and family self pay policies.

How does NY really expect people living on LI to afford health insurance???? Even Healthy NY for a family of 2 you need to make less than $2800 a month and still it costs an average of $500 a month!!!!!!It's like 20% of your salary!!!!!

Re: Health Insurance
We pay a crazy amount and live in upstate. My best advice is to join a local chamber of commerece (their rates are some of the "lowest.")

Re: Health Insurance
I was without insurance for many years...luckily, I only got sick once and it didn't cost an arm and a leg. But I looked into paying out of pocket for it and it was going to be insane for me to do that and I was making like $9/hour at my job. I took a chance.
try this also try here I remember reading in self magazine years ago about a company that offered decent rates. I looked into it and never went any further. I can't remember what it was, but it was around 100/month.
Good luck!

Re: Health Insurance
Try MDNY. I got my health insurance through an agency in riverhead - the washwick agency...they deal in getting insurance for small businesses. I think its about $670 for both my husband and I. My daughter has empire through child health plus and its another $170 per month for her.

Re: Health Insurance
Is it possible for your DH to join a guild?
I am self-employed and joined a guild related to my business. They provide insurance at a group rate. I pay about $260 per month.
Health insurance is so difficult for the self-employed. I'm so sorry.

It's an association of people in a trade. I belong to a guild of writers.
My guild does its health insurance through IRBA. Maybe check out if your DH can join IRBA (Independent & Retail Business Associates).

Hope it works out!

Re: Health Insurance
My DH is self employeed as well. We pay $12,000 a yr for health insurance (family plan). We have Empire BCBS. If your DH has employees he can get the same rates as an association but he can also pick the coverage he wants, with an assoc you are limited to what they choose to offer. We went from Washwick in Riverhead to our own BCBS policy. The only plus is a tax write off besides that its hard to write that check each month!!
