Hosta Spinoff & Question

I have a gazillion hostas...and I love 'em due to their low maintenance. However...when can I divide them (now while they are blooming or after the season when they are dormant)?

And...HOW do I divide them? I am FAR from a green thumb!

Hmmm... That one I can't answer. I've never had, or divided, hosta plants.

But I have heard that they are very resilient. So you may be able to just dig about a foot away from the center of the plant, lift it out of the ground and then just cut sections off.

now is a good time to divide them, its really hard to harm them. Do it before they get too leafy. Just dig around the outside then use your hand or a small spake to seperate the plant. Replant right away, add bone meal if you have it. It will kick start them.

the Fall is fine too. My cousin moved into a new house with TONS of Hosta, so he took some out and gave them to me.

I planted then very late, jeez I think Nov-Dec (though it was mild) and figured what ever happens happens... well they are popping up now!

Its best to divide them when they are just coming up but last year when we really dug into out new yard, I divided them in the middle of July and they were fine and came back beautifully this year.
