Style Icon of the Year: Jennifer Lopez
No question: Jennifer Lopez, 37, is a fashion risk-taker, tastemaker and, above all, innovator.
All of this and more is why Us Weekly is honoring Lopez on April 26 at L.A. club Sugar at our annual star-studded Hot Hollywood style party.
In 2001, she pioneered the concept of the high-end celebrity line (what star now doesn't have one?); today, her empire brings in more than a staggering $300 million in sales annually.
Now, on the cusp of launching Justsweet, her chic contemporary line, Us’s Style Icon of the Year explains her inimitable fashion instincts.
What’s your fashion philosophy? “It’s ever-evolving. I love when glamour is mixed with a modern feel to keep the style fresh.”
When’s the last time you felt you really hit a style home run? “I’d have to say at the Golden Globes. A successful red carpet moment is when dress, hair, makeup, bag, shoes and jewelry all come together in a way that looks glamorous and effortless at the same time. That’s how I felt that night.”
How has your husband, Marc Anthony, influenced the way you dress? “He always makes me feel sexy in whatever I wear, so I tend to be a bit more daring with the styles I choose. Knowing it’s not his favorite thing to do, I usually go shopping with a girlfriend – but if he’s around, I love getting his opinions.”
What are the three favorite items in your wardrobe? “My YSL platforms, my long Inhabit sweater and my favorite new addition, Justsweet silver Lurex turtleneck that I actually wore on American Idol the other week.”
As a designer, how do you picture the average girl wearing your clothes? “The great thing about this new line is that there are so many fits to accommodate all body types, and it appeals to such a wide range of women. Each piece in the Justsweet collection can be worn separately for a more classic look or mixed and matched for the more fashion-savvy girl.”
OK, let’s play fashion critic. What do you think when you hear “oversize bags”? “Necessary!”
White sunglasses? “Good idea, in theory.”
High-waisted jeans? “Risky. It’s interesting to see how cyclical the trends are. We’re in an ’80s revival in fashion, and five years ago, I don’t know how I would’ve felt wearing these styles. Today, I embrace them. My fashion sensibility has evolved as I evolve as a person.”
And how many shoes and bags do you own? “To be honest, I have never counted, and I think that’s for the best!”
