Gun Control
Did anyone see the woman from Texas who came forward to talk about when her parents were gunned down in a diner? She suggests that if people were allowed to bear their arms in states that it is legal that someone might have been able to stop the killing spree(s). What do you think of this? Do you think all these kids on campus should be able to bring their guns to school since if there is a disturbed indivivdual who has all intentions on killing, rules and laws obviously won't stop them...

I didn't want to start anything really, I just wanted to see others' thoughts. I hope it doesn't get ugly

Re: Gun Control
I think it is hard to make a drastic change to any society so quickly. I will say that there are statistics to support that in areas where "everyone has a gun" the crimes resulting in fire arm murders are less. However to try & transition to that in our society would be anarchy and unrealistic. It would be like unleashing a bunch of kids in a candy store who never had sugar....JMO.
I think it is a very complicated issue, and I do agree that it would be very hard to argue it here.

Re: Gun Control
I think its a ridiculous notion- and not the solution to this issue. Can you imagine, being in college, going to class packing a gun? What kind of society would this be if everyone was carrying a loaded weapon? The statistics (I have seen) actually state that in areas that have higher levels of gun control (like NYC) these kinds of things are less apt to happen.

I will be the first to say that the statistics are skewed greatly, depending on who is referring to them. In other countries where there are virtually no gun control laws they *claim* to have less crimes committed with firearms. Since I don't live in those countries, I cannot say how true this is.

I understand what the person was trying to say, but vigilantilism is not the answer either.

Re: Gun Control
in Switzerland, almost every single person owns a gun - even machine guns. they also have one of the lowest crime rates of any country in the world.
so IMO, there is something to be said about that. a criminal might think twice if he knew for a fact that the person he was about to attack was carrying a gun too. I used to be 10000% pro gun control. but what are you going to do if someone breaks into your home? call the cops? sure! but you might be dead by the time they get there.
ETA: "In Switzerland, the purchase of semi automatic rifles and shotguns requires no permit, and adults are free to carry them. Handguns can be bought with firearm purchase permits, which are issued to all adults without a criminal record or a history of mental illness. About 40% of Switzerland's cantons (states) do not require a permit to carry a handgun. Switzerland has a citizen militia where most all men between the ages of 21 and 32 are required to keep fully automatic machine guns in their home. (1)(46)"

Re: Gun Control
There are two types of people in the world, people that want all guns banned and then there are hunters and people who have guns for self-protection. The two sides will never see eye to eye so I am pleading the 5th.
