Re: Who diagnoses anxiety...
Either one. If it's severe you might as well finda pschiatrist they are more equipped to make definitieve diagnoses and give you medication. Your primary doctor can also listen to your symptoms and advise you about next steps.

Re: Who diagnoses anxiety...
A psychiatrist or you primary dr can diagnose it.
If you feel you might have an anxiety disorder, please get help. A good social worker or psychologist can help you too(but they can't prescribe meds).

Re: Who diagnoses anxiety...
anxiety and anxiety disorder are two different things... I have anxiety/panic disorder.... which basically means frequent attacks, no just worrying, but attacks... I orginally thought I was having heart problems so I saw my reg. dr and my then a cardiologist....

Re: Who diagnoses anxiety...
I went to my primary doctor who prescribed medication but I am now seeing a therapist as well. But I think it also depends on the level of symptoms you are having

Re: Who diagnoses anxiety...
It is not too bad. But... I ZOLOFT did not do anything for me, it made me so much worse. So now I have xanax, but I want something I can take everyday...

Re: Who diagnoses anxiety...
Buspar is a good anti anxiety medication that can be taken everyday. it must be taken consistently for at least 2 weeks to achieve an Anti-anxiety effect and therefore cannot be used on an "as-needed" basis like xanax.
I have seen it work in a few of my patients.( i am a psych nurse)
A psychiatrist can diagnose anxiety as well as prescribe medication.
Good luck, any questions, feel fre to ask.

Re: Who diagnoses anxiety...
My GP diagnosed mine...back in 1999. For me it comes and goes, for a year or so it happend semi-frequently and then stopped almost immediately. Didn't happen again for 2 years and now it's back and worse than ever!
I hate it and wish it would just GO AWAY!

Re: Who diagnoses anxiety...
I am a psychotherapist (LCSW) - so I have to just put a vote in for therapy to help treat anxiety. I think medications are very helpful but they are much better when used in conjunction with therapy.

Re: Who diagnoses anxiety...
You should definitely go see a psychiatrist. When I was having issues with anxiety, my dr told me he could give me something, but I would be better off seeing someone who specializes in that field

Re: Who diagnoses anxiety...
I don't really recommend going to your GP for medication - if you want, you can FM me for my experience (not a bad one, just hassles you shouldn't have to deal with).
As far as going to your GP for testing on everything else, if you are going to a thorough psychiatrist he will send you for a full blood work-up. When I first started seeing my psychiatrist he sent me for blood work-up and will send me about once a year as follow-up. FM me if you want his name.
Don't worry so much at first on a diagnosis - it will only make things worse. If the anxiety is interfering with your regular everyday life you should contact a psychologist/therapist/shaman - whomever you would be the most comfortable talking to.
I have had panic disorder for almost 20 years so if you have more questions feel free to FM me.
