Westchester vs. Newark

Ok, here's the deal. This is all hypoithetical right now, but I am thinking/

I just starte d anew job. I trained in Newark, but my perm. office will be in Westchester. After a week in Newark I got used to the commute although it was 2 trains for a total of almost 2 hours each way.

Westchester is different. It could tkae me an hour by car, or in weather like this, like today I could never get there.

I know my boss is looking to hire someone else for NJ within a few weeks, so what I could theoretically do is ask if he can look for someone for Westchester instead and then transfer back to NJ.

So the question is, which commute do you think is less hellish ..2 hours on 2 trains to NJ (at least i get to sleep), or a drive to Westchester that can take anywhere from 45 minutes to hours?

I haven't even tried the drive yet except for today, but today made me really nervous.

Yeah..I was hired for Westchester.but I'm wondering, hypothetically, if I could change my mind, should I? If I want to, now is the time, BEFORE he starts recruiting.

I'm not saying I would do this, but I'm just wondering if it would even be a good thing if I could.

Another thing is that I believe there may be slightly more career opportunity in Weschester because 1_There's no director there, so if the business increased such that they'd need one in Westychester, I'd be primed to take that promotion and 2) it's in a whole center, not an isolated office, so I'd be making more company-wide contacts.

Also, if I work in NJ then I cna be expected to drive almost anywhere in NJ< wheras working in Westchester it's all of Westchester/Rockland and Connecticut.

I would rather have the 45-1 hour drive. The LIRR stinks, as do the subways and NJ transit. Even though you will occassionally hit more traffic, I would rather take the shorter commute.

Re: Westchester vs. Newark

i'd pick westchester. i'd rather have the chance of a 45 minute commute than a guarenteed 2 hour commute.

Re: Westchester vs. Newark

I think you make a commitment to be there at 9:00 or whatever, and the trains are more predictable. Would you be willing to leave yourself 2 hours or more driving time each way, because traffic make take that long? From my experience, people who drive for commutes that long generally have to leave themselves lots of extra time to make sure they get there on time.

I prefer the train to driving--it's more predictable, and you can concentrate less. At the end of a long day there is nothing I want to do less than spend hours in the car.

I'd stick with Westchester.

This storm was crazier than usual, people were saying it was the worst flooding in 30 years or something. It was just extreme bad luck that it was during your first week.

The parkways always flood, but its not usually this bad. As Beth said in your other thread, you'll get used to alternate routes.

Re: Westchester vs. Newark

ideally, NJ would be best

but honestly, you were hired for westchester, and having not completed a week on the job, i am not sure you want to ask for a transfer

yes, it would solve the problem, but if I'm an employer, I would think that you considered all of this BEFORE taking the job and asking for a transfer now, when you haven't even done the commute yet, would rub me the wrong way.

Look at it this way, in bad weather, where driving is involved, you might have an excuse for not coming in

If you rely on the trains, you have NO excuse unless the trains shut down completely.

And the 2 hour each way commute can easily turn into 4 hours each way. And like I said, when public transportation is involved, you have no excuse.

Re: Westchester vs. Newark

Thanks, I feel better.

I am really grateful and I hope the weather report stays as what it is for Wednesday because I have to drive to NEW HAVEN!

I was Chat Icon when I heard I had to drive to New Haven in my first week.

My boss offered for me to work in NJ tomorrow if the flooding continues, which is good. I'm glad I have that flexibility.

I hear what you're saying. If I can work in NJ if it snows or something, that would completely solve the problem, too and that may be the case.

I don't want to look like an azzhole asking for a transfer (I was going to try the commute first, but still), but it's the kind of situation where if I really felt it would be a LOT better for me, I would ask, because It doens't hurt to ask and my boss is the epitome of awesomeness and he's been my boss on and off for 4 years (he was my boss when I was a part-timer, and he hirted me for this FT without a formal "interview"), so we go back, he already likes me, obviously, so he knows I'm not a flaky person.

NJ is not that much better than NY right now in terms of flooding. Many of the NJTransit trains were not running today. I work for a huge company, and quite a few of our offices were closed today due to the flooding.

As a side note, I commuted from Farmingdale to Newark for almost a year, it wasn't so bad, and I didn't have to deal with the traffic. The days that I absolutely had to drive, I left very early in the morning to avoid the traffic and was usually able to drive to Newark in just under an hour

I would choose Westchester. I hate NJ Transit.
