Help with a landlord situation

I have been posting about this on the Home board, but these people have gotten so out of control have taken it to a personal level, that DH and I just don't know what to do.

We are renting a house and the lease is up on May 31st. Our rent is paid up (although as of today--April 15th--they haven't cashed the check yet) but our landlords want to sell the house (which they are entitled to) but they never told us this, they just started having brokers call DH. And before we could even say anything to them they decided tehy wanted to "evict" us. They have posted a 30 day notice on our door and have been sending threatening text messages to our phones basically saying "You don't know who you are messing with" and last night DH got one that they filed a report with the fire commissioner (DH works for FDNY EMS) and again "You don't know who you are messing with"

We filed a harrassment report, but it was never served on them. We are going to file another one today, but we are at our wits end with this. I am 9 months pregnant and honestly, I don't know that this woman (it is a married couple) won't hurt me. We have not called them, spoken to them or done anything to them except send our rent check at the beginning of the month.

WHAT can we do?

ETA: We are currently looking to move before May 31st as well, just to get out.

Chat Icon OMG! I am so sorry you're dealing with this.

I would call the police, not 911, but call your precinct and ask what your options are. good luck Chat Icon

btw - is this a "legal" apartment?

Yes. We rent the entire house. We have a lease as well.

if the lease says you have until 5/31, then that's how long you have! a lease is a binding contract and will hold up in any court.

THEY apparently don't know what they're messing with Chat Icon IMO, they're trying to "scare" you into not fighting them on the lease agreement.

Wait until after you move out, then contact their perspective buyer and any brokers involved and make sure they know about the situation and the "you don't know who you are dealing with messages." If nothing else, it puts these people on notice not to take any crap during their purchase.

Have you contacted a lawyer yet? Many posters on the home board urged you to do so.

I work for a lawyer. I have been told that legally, since the 30 day notice says we have to be out on the last day of the lease, we can't do anything.

I am talking about more the harassment aspect thoChat Icon

I don't understand why they are so hostile towards you. The lease is up next month and they notified you of their intent to not renew the lease as is their right. You are going to move. There's no need and no way they could evict you.

I would document everything and report it to the police and get a lawyer so your rights are not violated.
