I'm a state employee. Excellent benefits and retirement with a high employer contribution, a very strong union, stability/security, many vacation days/sick days...
Any questions, FM me. When I was first hired they told us that the benefits alone are worth $15,000-20,000 added onto our salary, so though the pay may be less than a private company I personally think the benefits are worth it. Plus at a time when many of my friends were being downsized and laid off, being in the state system was priceless.

My DH just started a state job this week. We heard all about the great benefits but were surprised that the employee contribution for a couple is pretty high - double what I pay through my job, so we're staying with my medical and dental benefits.
He took a pay-cut for this job, but for us, the best thing about his job is the hours, the stability, the state pension and the fact that it's only 10 minutes from home. And so far he loves it, which is a big bonus!

I will add that there are a bunch of different type state jobs, and all have different unions and benefits. Like CSEA is the secretarial union, which has different benefits from the union I am in.

I worked for the State of NY for a few years. I am still KICKING myself for leaving everyday 
PROS:
Days off!! Tons!!!! Even half days before the holiday.
Ample vacation and personal time!!!
Medical Benefits are amazing!! (I would get $500 a YEAR for glasses, I'm telling you a got quite a few pairs of Chanel glasses  )
Casual dress
Child care (I don't have kids, but people work there just for this!)
Growth (they love to hire within b/c of hiring freezes)
CONS:
Money isn't so great....that is why I left.
Can be a "boys club". I worked in finance, and there is def. a priority
Special "favors". Alot of people have their job b/c they are friends of someone political. I found it very unfair to the rest of us. Alot, not all, but alot of these people didn't do anything and raked in the bucks (but with change in admin, they are all gone...)
Red Tape....oh boy...that is a big one. Let's just say I interviewed for my job in Jan and started in September!! Ugh...

Just wanted to add that my job (state) does have childcare, but it is $1300 per child per month, so it's not like it is super cheap.

I don't know how we did it, but it is vouchers/checks for childcare costs that are given yearly.

my father's entire working life has been with NY State-and it has been nothing but good to him! Even back in the early 90s when his job laid him off- they immediately helped find him another job in another state hospital-so he has been in Brooklyn since.
He has had a long commute from Long Island and a "rough" drive for a long time, but the benefits, the security, his retirement/pension- all worth it!
He retired in April- but they couldn't let him "go" for some state testing reasons-they hired him back 3 days a week-so he gets his retirement and is still able to work too- HE loves it- He is young so he would have gone back to work somewhere anyway- and now he gets to stay at his job where he is comfortable for however much longer!

That's only for State positions, b/c the Town and County govts are represented by CSEA and it's a much larger union there for all employees.

I completely agree, but you can always work around your salary if you proove your worth and it's easy to move around within state positions to other offices.

Maternity leave is non-existent as a UUP (faculty/professional staff union) member. Actually, I think faculty have some flexibility; staff do not.
Otherwise, benefits are good.

Do these state jobs have paid maternity leave? Or unpaid beyond the FMLA guidelines? I know my position doesn't offer much (anything?) in the way of maternity leave above FMLA.

I don't work for the state, but have a municipal job. The main reason I stay are the benefits and the amount of time off.
We don't have paid maternity leave, but you can use all of your accumulated paid time off. Unused sick time and vacation time carries over to the following year if you don't use it. Also, I can take up to a year unpaid leave if I want, and still have my job, with my current salary and benefits.

I work for the state, but for the courts. And am represented by a different union than csea. I love my job and my benefits. To tell you the truth right now I have approx 6 months saved (vaca & sick) that I could take at full pay if I needed it.
