Determining sex

I had my ultrascreen test today. Im 11 weeks 4 days. I asked the sono tech if she could tell the sex. The baby had its legs wide open and she said it is most likely a boy because we could clearly see "something". But she said it could also be the umbilical cord but she didn't see any blood flow. What should the umbilical cord look like at 11 weeks? I thought it would be much longer.

Re: Determining sex

I would say at this point in pregnancy, the umbilical cord would be more easier to believe.

Boys tend to have organs more visible sooner but according to books (that I have read) organs dont tend to be visible till 12wks plus.

So, hang in there till your next sono or 20wks one to confirm.

That's great! Now that I look, it does look like an external organ Chat Icon

Don't believe any guesses at this point. The tech told us at 12 weeks she thought it would be a boy - she was very clearly a girl at 16 weeks and it has been confirmed 3 times since then.

Umbilical cord is supposed to be equal to the length of the baby...so at 11 weeks, it wouldn't be incredibly long yet.

For the most part, they have to wait longer than 11 weeks to even really begin guessing...so just wait a little longer!Chat Icon

I had my ultrascreen at exactly 12 weeks..I asked the Dr..on a whim..if he could tell what the baby was. I said "I already know what the baby is"..BOY..he told me not to go buying boy clothes or anything but he was pretty sure...

I had another sonogram at almost 15 weeks and the tech said "this baby is definitely a boy"

Forward to today...

When I was at the doctor today he told me that in his experience that the babies that tend to jump right out at you tend to be, in fact correct. When the doctor or tech has to manipulate the situation is where the errors arise...Sometimes things are just clearer than others..

I was told at 14 weeks that at that point in pregnancy, boys and girls look pretty identical because girls parts are swollen and boys parts have not fully descended yet.

This is what I was told although my Dr. still was leaning more towards boy at my 14 week sono. My FIL & SIL (both obgyns) saw the sono picture and they both said its too early, since could be labial swelling.

I've also been told that it is impossible to tell the sex at this point. All fetuses start out with a bump.

Wait a little longer and you'll know. Good luck
