we found a house we really really like- and may be able to get for a real bargain!
What questions should I be asking?
ie- Insurance costs, etc?
Any help will be appreciated!

Questions to ask about the house before we bid- I can't get bill estiomates, because the house has been vacant for a few years.

Ask how old all the appliances are - frig, d/w, dryer, washer, stove, etc
how old the furnace is - when was it last cleaned
how old is the roof
are the windows new
have there been any issues with the cesspool/septic tank

Where is the Oil tank? If it is under ground, I would move on to another house.
If that tank leaks it will cost you over $100k to repair. Believe me I know. One of my father in laws cousins had this happwn at their house

Ok- great! Looks like we covered most bases.
It's a handyman- but the oil burner and hot water heater are new.
Cesspool will need to be replaced, but they are offering us a huge credit for that.
I am getting excited@!!!!!

Congrats, Is the house in West Islip because I know you were looking in that area. If so we will be neighbors. If you need a great Cesspool company let me know they are right in West Islip and my dad has known the owner for years, he is very good friends with him and I am sure he will give you a great deal.

Good luck Naunieness!! I thought you were only looking at condos, but that's great!
Can you also ask them what the normal utility costs are per month? I'm not sure if it's an ok thing to ask, but I know I would want to know.
Also about any insurance claims for water damage, etc?
Can you bring a hair dryer with you to check outlets?
I've never done this, I'm just thinking out loud about what I used to do when looking for apartments.
