maybe that is because they have enough? In reserves? 
or because big companies are donating the food already?

Maybe but people were saying if you dont have money then donate food but I cant do that either

I heard they were saying that because at this point they just don't have anywhere to store things...and also the Red Cross likes to accept monetary donations so that they can spend that money in the affected areas to stimulate their economies also.

Actually, I just saw on the news that you can donate goods on ebay. They also have a site on ebay that you get auction things off and set it so that the money goes to help the victims of the hurricane.

They need money, rather than goods because they don't need to worry about storing it or transporting it. Right now, they are having trouble getting people out of there and getting enough people in to do search and rescue to worry about donated goods getting to the right places.
After 9-11 people were donating food, clothing and water and if you remember, after a few days they said they could only accept money because they ran out of room to store things and it was too difficult to get those things to people who needed it. I know by the time I was going to donate clothing, like 2 days later, our local firehouse was inundated with stuff, like many all over NY.
