Don't shoot me if I posted this before, I didn't see it in a search of my posts on the Home board...
This is a link to the 33 page guide on how to buy a house. It's a good jumping off point, even if the $ amounts are skewed because NY is in a class all it's own.

Another recommendation, it sounds silly, but I found that the book House Buying for Dummies was invaluable when I was searching for my house.
