East Meadow *Update*
Hi everyone!
I have posted before on LIW about this. If you are not aware East Meadow School District is going into its third year without a teacher's contract.
The budget has been passed every year with a teacher's salary raise built in and the teachers are not receiving anything because they still are under an expired contact. As part of negotations the district is are offering the teacher 0% increase for the past 2 years. The question is then where does that money go then.
If you are a resident please contact your Board of Education. If you are looking to live in East Meadow please research the school district carefully. There are so many great teachers leaving.
Please attend a board meeting and just see what is going on in your district. This board meetings are unreal. You have to watch the meeting via a projection TV because the board will not sit in the same room as the teachers nor residents. When your name is called to speak you must run to the other room that is crammed with people and then speak. Alot of things have been written against the teachers but if you see for yourself how these meetings are conducted and what is said is CRAZY!
Residents, teachers from other districts and soon to be residents: Please Please Please come and see a meeting the next one is on November 16th at 8pm at the Salisbury Center on Plain Road in East Meadow Please check out East Meadow Teachers Association If you look under "Get the Facts" you will see the fact finders report and it looks horrible compared to other surrounding districts!
Update: NYC schools finally settled a contract (YAY for them ) and now they make more than a teacher in the East Meadow SD! Which I am totally happy for them! More and more good teachers will be leaving to go to the city or another district
This board meeting is in almost a week please please please attend and see how the board treats its own community!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bumping because I work in the district.. its a sad situation... :( can someone please explain this in layman's terms... what is the reason why they would expect teachers to work w/o a contract?? I seriously want to know why this happens.

I don't know about the EM situation, but in NYC we have worked without a contract in the past, for a couple years at a time.
Teachers (and other public employees, fire, cops, etc) cannot strike because theTaylor Law makes it illegal and imposes huge penalties (as with the transit union). Therefore the people in charge (in NYC, the Mayor) can drag their feet and make whatever demands they want because the teachers cannot strike. There is little incentive for them to settle, especially since teaching jobs are hard to get and they don't have to worry about a mass exodus.

ETA: what I mean is.. if the budget is passed, then property taxes increase, so who's getting that extra money?

ugh...i work there too!
you can't believe what is going on or what you read in the Herald. plus information from the central office is often skewed and does not clearly and accurately reflect all the facts. i think this makes it very difficult for the residents to make informed judgements!

Re: East Meadow
It's awful.
FYI: Many other districts are in their first year of no contract.
SEAFORD
WANTAGH
Long Beach recently settled after 3 years with no contract. From what I'm hearing it was so not in the teachers favor.
I teach in Seaford and the Board is not negotiating in good faith. Everytime the union and board met at the bargaining table with a new proposal the board comes back with nothing, just sits there. That is not negotiating in good faith.
Seaford is already second from the bottom of the pay scale in Nassau county.
The board's proposal will make us the lowest paid teachers on LI and the first several years starting salary will be a few thousand LOWER than NYC In any other district based upon my years of teaching, experience and educational level I would earn a minimum of 10K more a year.
Many of our teachers cannot afford to continue to live here but where are we to go if teaching certification is different in each state.
Trust me, these increases are not going into the teachers' pockets.
Please, whether you have children now or are planning in the future, it can take a decade for a district to turn itself around. Who will suffer? The value of your homes will decrease and the quality of education for your children is in jeopardy.
Please attend a board meeting in your local district and be an informed citizen. It is so important to everyone's quality of life.
Thank you.

Yes the entire district is without contract. all parts
good luck to all the EM teachers!
with no disrespect to the union, but why has it taken them so long to light a fire? I mean just starting to pickit? Teachers are still writing recommendations and having bday parties. If there is no solidarity, it's not going to be pretty.
I bet if recommendations stop, parents will be ALL for a new contract in favor of teachers

I dunno what the POA was for the EM union but I agree with the recomm.
But no matter what u say others are STILL doing things like that.
Frustrating
THe scary thing is if EM keeps going like this this may set a precedent to other school districts not to give a contract to their teachers also!
Also at the rate this district is going teachers will just use the school to get tenure and move on to another school. Sad they will lose sooooooooooooooo many great teachers!
Thanks for the support!

This board meeting is in almost a week please please please attend and see how the board treats its own community!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WE just had our board meeting in Seaford last Thursday. EVERY faculty member in the district was present because it's time to "step up the action". We've been in formal negotiations since January and the board DOES NOT negotiate in good faith. Negotiations mean give and take and well, they haven't. After several pro-teacher community members spoke the board president said he was going to call our union president.... well, he hasn't.
Our test results are on par with district that pay THOUSANDS of dollars more than ours. Our results are comparable to Plainview and Locust Valley, however, if I worked in Plainview I'd make so much more a year and I'd have dental insurance... YUP, no dental in my district.
So many residents think that an increase in property taxes=an increase in teacher's salaries. One has nothing to do with the other. Our contracts are for 5 years and are not based on the average budget increases.
And every proposal that has come back is also LOWER than the NYC teacher's contract.
We have a lot of teachers with 5 or less years in the district and everyone I spoke to plans on leaving.
As one homeowner who spoke at the meeting explained it, these tax payers are the same people who will spend tens of thousands of dollars on luxury cars and home improvements but will not support a fair and honest contract for the teachers of their children. Sad, very sad to know where many people's real priorities are.

That is a great point. many people are under the impression that the budgets have to do with teacher salary, and they dont.
You dont have dental?? Thats absurd.

Thankfully, now, I can buy a separate plan from my DH's job but he works for a small company and his benefits are not great but I SHOULDN"T have to.
Needless to say, with all of this going on I am really looking forward to maternity leave but if need be me AND the twins will always be there to support the union.
I'm not allowed to speak at the board meetings because I'm not a resident but if this goes on I will bring the Tah-win-ZAH's to all of the actions. I just have to remind myself not to give them their naps that day so they are screaming and yelling throughout
