My first OB visit
I met with Dr. Bergman tonight -- loved loved loved him!! Thank you for the recommendations!
Anyway I got to see our Baby P again and things still look fine and dandy - what a relief! My sister came with me this time. She was with me when I found out I missed last year, so this time it was nice she could see the heartbeat and out little one. Totally different experience, to say the least!! I go back in 2 weeks. He wants me to think about which test I should have - CVS? (Isn't that a drug store??), or another where you prick your finger (less invasive)....I am clueless!!
Any ideas on these test??

I didn't have the CVS, my dr. never told me about that one. The finger prick one is the nuchal transluscency (sp??) and ultrascreen (I think.) I did have that. They do a more advanced ultrasound where they measure the folds in the baby's neck. It tells you the chances of the baby having Down's and some other chromosomal disorders. I did have that one and the results were good, so I didn't have the amnio. Good luck deciding about all of the tests.

Re: My first OB visit
So glad your first OB appointment went well, Kara
As for the tests - yes, they can get confusing! For those of us of "advanced maternal age" (an oh-so-nice way of referring to us 35 yr old and up mommies ) the testing issues are usually brought up in more detail than for the yonger mommies to be --
That said - the CVS procedure is something I'm not entirely familiar with, but from what I've read it is similar to an amnio - it is just done much earlier in the pregnancy. I do know that Christine (CkGm) had a CVS done so she might have some better information for you on that if you want to FM her. I believe its done around 12-13 weeks and it is an invasive procedure that comes with some minor risk factors as amnios do. The CVS is much more accurate in terms of detecting problems with the baby, whereas the ultrascreen is only a screening test and cannot 100% rule out abnormalities with the baby.
The ultrascreen/finger prick test is the nucheal translucency (spelling?) Its a sonogram and a blood test, and is done between 11-13 wks. It's exactly as Suzy described, so I won't repeat her great info
Good Luck with your decisions..

Thanks so much....that clears it up a bit. I think I will stick with less invasive for the time being. DH and I discussed amnio and ultimately I am against it for me. I guess I should do this other stuff tho and see what we gots.

Re: My first OB visit
I would do the second test, way less invasive and a good, reliable starting point. It's the Nuchal Translucency test. You can google it and get more info. If anything comes back abnormal from that point I would consider an amnio or CVS but I would go the less invasive route first. So glad everything is looking good.

Re: My first OB visit
Yea!!!
We had our first OB visits on the same day!! That Gonal F will forever bond us!!
I'm doing the NT with the finger prick. If anything comes back from that we will consider the CVS and amnio, but if everything goes okay with the NT I won't do those.
I'm so excited for you!!!
