School sports and Booster Clubs

Growing up, school sports were covered by taxes. Now it seems that there is an expectation to join the booster club (dues well over $100) and fundraise multiple times per season ($300-500). My son’s club travel team is only $750 and runs all year.

Are booster clubs the norm? I actually work at a school and my district has said booster clubs can fundraiser, but cannot charge dues.

Booster club in my district is optional. It does cost a fee but it's minimal. If I remember correctly, it's about $25 a year. The money raised goes back to the kids for banners, scholarships, etc.

In our district - each sport has their own booster club. There are no dues but there are various fundraisers each family is "encouraged" to participate in.

Some sports fundraise more than others - hockey, football and baseball are probably the biggest as they have the largest expenses (equipment outside of what the budget covers, stipend for "volunteer" coaches, etc).
