Yard Sale Advice?
I want to have a yard sale in the upcoming weeks but I have never had one or been to one so am not sure where to start.
Please give me any tips you may have to make it successful.
Do you advertise? Put up signs? if so, where?
Any help would be appreciated!!

Re: Yard Sale Advice?
You can advertise for free on Craigslist
I'd put up signs near busy corners/intersections

Re: Yard Sale Advice?
Advertise on craigslist... it's free and lots of people check there!
put up signs with big wording, saying very little because even if you're only driving 25mph it's impossible to read all the words on those signs people make! put... YARD SALE DATE TIMES AND PUT AN ARROW
make a few of those with different direction arrows around the neighborhood so that people can just follow the arrows

Re: Yard Sale Advice?
Signs (I got some "stick in the ground" premaid at HD).
Plastic bags (lots of them)
Get change ahead of time ($5 and $1 bills and LOTS of quarters)
Be ready to be asked to made "package deals". You will be asked How much for that, that, that and that.
Don't price too high.
Don't put expensive piece out. People expect bargain prices. Reserve things almost new or higher prices for craigs list, etc...
Be willing to let go for almost nothing.
Women clothes are not very successful.
No need to spend a fortune dry cleaning gowns. That's not the place for those items.
Purses, frames, vases, wall art, bathroom accessories and pretty little things sell very well.
For clothes, for whatever does not sell and I DO NOT WANT back in the house. Have garbage bags ready and either trash or donate the following week.
Remember that whatever you don't sell, DOES come back in your house.

Re: Yard Sale Advice?
put up signs on major rds in all directions.... advertise in the penny pincher (or whatever they call it out on LI) .... also put it on craigslist...
In the ads, list some of the more appealing, bigger ticket items to attract people

SIGNS SIGNS SIGNS!
use the SAME COLOR for signs and put out a lot of them. Sometimes I drive around just looking for sales and if I can't find a sign or I get frustrated, I don't bother to keep going.

Re: Yard Sale Advice?
In Town of Islip you need a permit - I think it's $15 and you can get it at town hall. I'm not sure about other towns and I can't say if they bother checking craigs list postings or other advertising. You may not get bothered if you skip it. I know our neighbor who always has a couple every year always gets the permit.
