Traveling to resort for friends birthday celebration you had problems at many years ago

In 15 years I would think maybe the hotel has changed? That’s not very recent I would look for the most recent reviews of the hotel within the last 2 years on various travel sites. If there is no improvement then no I wouldn’t go. I’m sorry if I’m spending money on a vacation I want to enjoy myself!

Since that was 15 years ago I think it would make sense to read the current reviews and take a look at the pictures travelers post on tripadvisor and any other travel review sites. I always always make it a point to read up-to-date reviews of places I am going to.

i would go out for dinner with your friend and treat her to dinner/drinks. My vacation time is for things I want to do.

If none of the tripadvisor reviews mention this problem then I would consider going back but that would be tough.

Re: Traveling to resort for friends birthday celebration you had problems at many years ago

This is something DH and i would fight over. I couldn’t go back no matter how long it’s been. Me and bugs (especially roaches) do not mesh well. I wouldn’t be able to sleep at all the entire time and would skeeve every piece of food I ate there. I’m also very allergic to roaches - I wanna vomit just typing that out.

Personally, I wouldn’t go. But I know how ridiculous I can be about that kind of stuff.

So it depends on you. It sounds like you have some serious PTSD from that last experience if it still haunts you

Re: Traveling to resort for friends birthday celebration you had problems at many years ago

I would really have to like these friends.
Once burned, twice shy.

I had a similar experience in Punta Cana a few years ago, I will never EVER go back to the resort even if it was free. Actually gave it a bad review on Trip Advisor, something I usually do not do.
But my review was filled with facts, like the pool being half filled with water, we were told not to flush toilet paper down the toilet (!), the bed was too small for the frame, had to stuff pillows around it to stop the mattress from moving. A tabletop ironing board - but no table to put it on, and the only available outlet was in the bathroom. Bugs got in our room thru the gap under the door, we stuffed towels at night to keep them out.
Housekeeping started banging around early in the morning and always came at 5pm when we were showering and dressing for dinner. The A/C unit sounded like a freaking jet engine every time it kicked on.
This was not a cheap resort, and we were in the supposed concierge club level.

Nope. Especially with your update about the review with the roach in the luggage.

Vacation time + vacation money is too precious to spend on revisiting a place that sounded so horrible. Yeah, things could have and probably did change over the past 10+ years but I still wouldn’t return after the experiences you had there. No way.

I skeeve hotels so bad. If it's not a 4-5 star with 5 star reviews I can't do it.
And I agree with the others- vacation time and the money spent on trips like this is too precious.

I wouldn't ask anyone to travel for my birthday.
I'd take DH and go.
To me that's asking a lot for a birthday.

How about dinner and drinks? Whatever happened to that?

I know! I'm the same with hotels. I think we talked in past about margaritaville. Still have to go back there.

No, I don't think I'd go. Especially since it was a casual "hey are you interested?" No you have another vacation destination in mind. Since they already booked, I wouldn't tell them about your experiences though.

I am the same exact way with hotels. I had my worst hotel nightmare come true at a Florida resort 2 years ago and still have anxiety thinking about it. I will never visit that resort ever again. I skeeves hotels before that but now it’s worse and I have a very hard time staying in hotels now. I’m completely traumatized. I would definitely not go back, especially with the trip advisor review you read!!

Yes you should tell them! If you're friends, then why wouldn't you tell them your experience? You aren't telling them to cancel, you're just giving them more info.

If they come home and complain about roaches and you say, oh yeah, we had that problem there years ago, they will be more angry!

I agree with this. We went to a resort that my BIL and SIL had gone to and hated it. When we came back and said we hated it they said “oh yeah, it was horrible.” Thanks guys.
