XPost: Help me with BREAST PUMPS!! Pretty Please!!!

What kind of pump do you have and WHY do you like it??

I heard the Medela ones were good and I found some Medela ones at Target...

Medela Pump In style Advanced Breast Pump with metro bag

Medela Freestyle hands free pump

Medela Pump in Style Advanced breast pump with backpack

IDK what the difference is between these 3... except for price. the description seems the same to me. If anyone knows... PLEASE POST!!!!

UGH I'm SO LOST here!!! I'm trying to not spend a CRAZY amount of money here. I don't know which would be best for me. I know I don't want anything manual. I am going to be a SAHM and plan to pump for AT LEAST 6 months.

Also, with these pumps, what accessories do I really need??

Re: XPost: Help me with Breast Pumps!! Pretty Please!!!

if you dont want to spend a lot of money, id look to buy a used one and then buy the parts which are like $20. i bought the $400 and only used it for 3 weeks! i planned to use it a lot longer.

I used the Pump in Style Advanced metro bag with DD and it worked well for me. I plan on getting the Freestyle this time around, been hearing such wonderful reviews about the Freestyle.

Re: XPost: Help me with BREAST PUMPS!! Pretty Please!!!

I never had a Medela, I had an Ameda Purely Yours. It was much cheaper (199) and worked just fine.

I see you haven't given birth yet (good luck in advance and easy labor vibes!), but here is my advice as a EBF/extended BFing mom-do not run out and buy a pump just yet. They are $$$ and you want to make sure that you are absolutely going to BF/pump, as the first month is definitely trying. I would faster rent the pump for the first month from the hospital. The hospital pump is a lot stronger, which is great for removing milk from your breasts. Then, if all works out, buy one a month later. I know people don't want to rent and waste money, but IMO, it was a smarter idea than running out to buy a 300 dollar pump that you might not need.

If you do choose to get a pump, you would need the tubing, bottles, membranes, and breast shield. Most women are the regular 24mm size. You can call the hospital you are delivering at and speak with a LC and they can tell you exactly what you need. My pump came with everything I needed and I had a set for free from my hospital since I rented the pump.

Thank You! I have a scheduled C section set for Wednesday.

I thought about renting a pump; but I don't want to rent for the duration of the BF time. I would perhaps rent for the first month like you said. I am on unemployment right now... so 60 a month to rent for at least 6 months adds up to more than the cost of just buying a pump... also I'm planning on having more kids so I do want to invest in a good pump (but trying to not spend more than say $300... the less the better).

So, if I rent from the hospital for the first month... it comes with the accessories or would I have to buy them separately? I'm going to be delivering at LIJ (IDK if different hospitals do things differently).

I can! I had the PISA for my first 2 babies, but got the Freestyle for my third.

The PISA is a great pump and I had no issues with it when I used it. BUT......

Freestyle wins, hands down. The pump itself is so small, whereas the PISA is actually attached to the bag it comes in. The greatest feature is the hands free option. It works with any regular nursing bra, so no need for a special bra. Plus, it truly IS hands free and comes with an attachment so you can wear the pump. I always had trouble with the hands free stuff using the PISA.

Another thing I liked is that the Freestyle is rechargeable and it doesn't lose suction whether on battery or electric power. I found the PISA had less suction on battery power.

Hope this was helpful!Chat Icon

I have the Instyle in the backpack. Works great for me, my best friend had the freestyle and she said the suction wasn't as good, but everyone on here seems to love it. I just went with the instyle because it was a bit cheaper, but still a good pump.

I have the Freestyle and I love it - the hands free pumping is great, and the pump itself works great, though I have nothing to compare it to.

I would not wait to buy it until the baby comes - I did not plan on using mine for a while, but dd wouldn't latch and I had to pump right away to get my milk supply going, so I am so glad I had it.

Also, call Edgepark and see if your insurance will cover it - mine was covered 100%.

Good luck!

ITA with this! I planned on BFing/pumping for a year, and my milk never fully came in so by 4 months I was done. Renting for the first month is a great thing for a few reasons....you will be sure you like pumping/be sure bfing is working out, it is super strong, so it will help build your supply, and I found the Symphony to be easier on my breasts. You are going to have some pain when you start out, so you want a strong breast pump, that won't be uncomfortable. The Medela Symphony did that for me. You will have to buy the accessories ($70 or so) but I really think it is worth it!

I was in the EXACT same position as you, so I can definitely relate (unemployment, scheduled c/s). I would call the hospital and find out. I delivered OOS so I am not sure what every hospital does, but I am pretty sure they would include the parts with the pump. I agree, I would not rent for more than a month. But by then, you will have a better feel for what you will do.

I would honestly check out the Ameda Purely Yours. I know every cent counts on unemployment and it was significantly less than the Medela. I bought mine from Diapers.com. I was very happy with it and I did a lot of pumping initially.

Good luck with your c/s!

Re: XPost: Help me with BREAST PUMPS!! Pretty Please!!!

I had the ameda & love it. It is great. Works on batteries, car adapter. The reason I got the ameda is bc that what was in the hospital where dd was born. They gave me two sets of parts for their hospital pump while I was there. I was able to rent the hospital pump a week at a time. I rented for two weeks then bought the purely yours. Not sure how things work where you deliver. I wouldnt buy it yet. I would wait. Pick which one you want & DH can always run out. That is if you go with medela. Ameda I think you have to order not sure. I have been able to buy parts for it in the BRU near me. Hth!!!

Re: XPost: Help me with BREAST PUMPS!! Pretty Please!!!

My suggestion is the same as others...rent one first!! My family had purchased one for me but I never opened it or any of the accessories just in case BFing didn't work for me.

It turns out that my boobs malfucntioned and I couldn't breastfeed. What I did was rent a pump from BRU (my hospital was out of pumps) for $80 in the hopes that my milk would come in once I go home. It never did so I just returned the rented pump and returned the purchased pump and accessories for a full refund on the purchased stuff.

In the hospital I used their pump and that is where I got all of the tubing and cups. When you try pumping in the hospial they give you that and if you want the second tube and cup you have to purchase it.

Hope that helps!

Re: XPost: Help me with BREAST PUMPS!! Pretty Please!!!

I have the Instyle with the Metro Bag and its good but I wish I would have gotten the Freestyle as having something smaller and truly handsfree would be awesome because there will be times when you will need to get up for something (crying baby) and you'll be stuck to the pump.

I also second waiting until you see how BFing goes before buying one...I ended up needing to buy a pump when she was 2weeks old and have been having supply issues and am kinda wishing I would have rented one as it is a lot of money to spend...

I also have the PISA with metro bag (I think--it's not the backpack). I'm a SAHM mom--been nursing for almost 6 months--and it suits my needs just fine! I just use the hands-free bra from Medela with it.

I waited 3 weeks to get my pump, because I wanted to make sure this was something that I was going to stick with before purchasing.

I agree 100% with Michelle-- try renting for one month and then buy. I also bought the Ameda Purely Yours. It's been a great pump, and I am still BF and DD turns 1 on Saturday.

Re: XPost: Help me with BREAST PUMPS!! Pretty Please!!!

i agree - don't bother buying one yet. wait and see and rent. i got my medela freestyle as a gift. however with DD being a preemie i ended up having tons of milk issues and i ended up having to rent the Medela Symphony from the hospital. its a great pump but its not really portable. i go back to work next week and i have to start using the freestyle and im worried it wont be strong enough to get my milk out since the hospital one is so much stronger.

the point is although you have a plan of what you want to do, you are better off waiting and seeing what your situation is. you may need the stronger hospital grade pump at first, or you may decide BF isn't for you, or your baby may have a milk allergy or something that causes you to not BF. dont waste the money on something thats generally not returnable until you are sure.

ETA - LIJ uses the medela symphony pumps. they will give you a set of parts while you are there. those parts work on many other medela pumps, but not the freestyle.

OK I contacted Edgepark and i'm waiting for the call that tells me if they are approved and covered by my insurance. I pray that it is.

In any event.. I'll rent from the hospital for the first month and then I'll buy one of the pumps.

Thank you sooo much for all the help!! If anyone else wants to chime in with info... please go right ahead!!

ha ha it figures the parts from LIJ cover other medela styles but not the freestyle.... which is the one i'm looking most into.

I got the first one and loved it because the bag looked more like a bag. I didn't like the backpack look. I have no idea how the handsfree works? Is that the one with the bra thing? I honestly can't imagine wearing that all the time. JMO.

Medela makes great pumps.
