I was able to use hubby's smartphone when I had DS (July 2010) but without an air card you can not use a laptop. I think the smartphones run on a different network than a laptop.

I was in Good Sam for 2 months and they DO NOT have a wifi connection that you can use...it SUCKED! Yes, you can use your smartphone which runs on its own network. However, if you are on the 4th floor (antepartum) you will have no cell reception most likely. The L&D floor and the Mother/Baby floor have good reception.
