Re: Hyphenating last name

I probably won't do this (I'm keeping my name), but it's a really popular option. I don't think anything about people who hyphenate their names, just another choice. I like it, it's a connection to your family as in parents, and a connection to your family as in hubby and usually children

Re: Hyphenating last name

I wanted to make my maiden name my middle name, which you now cannot do without going to court to legally change it. Chat Icon So I wound up just keeping my old middle name and DH's last name.

I don't think anything of it, it just seems like a hassle to sign that long a name when signing everything (my maiden name is long enough to make it a pain). Plus I feel for the kids that then have to write out all that. I kept my maiden name at work and finishing my doctorate because I had stuff published already under the maiden name. It's kind of weird having to remember which last name I'm using when people ask me (since it's different at work/school and outside of work).

I hyphenated my name. It's a huge PITA. I wish I'd just kept my maiden name. Actually, I still only use my maiden name at work (I am a teacher) but all my official papers (paystub, ie) are with my hyphenated name.

If a woman does choose to hyphenate I say good for her. I completely understand being torn between your maiden name and your husband's name. That was my reasoning, anyway. I also didn't get married till I was 32, which made it a little harder for me to give it up, since I'd had the name for a long time.

ETA: When we have kids they will have DH's last name- it's too much to hang on a little kid.

I think how cool was it that she has a last name she can hyphenate.

Mine would have been a horrificly long name that just screamed mafia so I couldn't do it. If I had an easy name like "Gates" or "Smith" I would definitely do it.

I think for DHs it's more of an issue. In fact, I know my DH would have an issue if I didn't take his last name or hyphenated. He still isn't over the fact that when I help people pronounce our last name I say "It rhymes with cornonary" Chat Icon

Re: Hyphenating last name

I wanted to do it. Mike was against it. So I just took his last name. I work in a bank and So many people tell me what a PITA it is with the Hyphenated last name. So I guess im kinda happy I didnt do it.

Re: Hyphenating last name

I did this at first - then it became a big pain in the u-know-what because my name was sooo long and it never fit on any of my credit cards - and forget fitting it on my license..and signing my name was a joke becasue, again, it was so long!

I didnt want to give up my maiden name at first but Im OK with it now.

Totally agree...I wound up just keeping my name b/c to hyphenate it would have been a mouthful - two very Italian last names, both 8 letters long, both ending in the same 3 letters Chat Icon

DH actually thought it would have been weird HAD I changed my name. Chat Icon

I just took DH's last name. We both have long italian names too. My maiden name is 9 letters long and his is 11 letters long. Just too much to have to hyphenate.Chat Icon

Re: Hyphenating last name

I kept my last name. Honestly, I never wanted to hyphenate, because I sort of felt either I was going to change it or not. If DH was also willing to take the hypehnated name, I might have done it, but he didn't want to, so I just kept mine. I think whatever you want to be called should be your choice.

As a former teacher, I did notice that not many of the kids had the hyphenated names, if the mothers did, the kids mostly had the dad's last name. I also noticed that when teachers addressed those moms, they ended up dropping off one of the names and ended up calling the woman by only one of the last names (usually the one the child had.)

That's how I felt too. Most people I know with parents with hyph names or whose mom kept her name sstill go by the dad's name, so you'll still be called "Mrs. DH" alot.

Re: Hyphenating last name

I hyphenated my last name (also wanted to make my middle name my maiden). At this point, I am glad I did. My maiden last name is short (4 letters) and my married name is only 6. I am a licensed social worker and all of my professional affiliations are in my maiden name.
