WWYD….Zika Virus and TTC
We have a trip booked in a couple of weeks for a carribean country not YET listed as a zika outbreak…. would you go, or would you pick somewhere different in the US? We will be TTC this summer.

I wouldn't go. This virus is way too scary and to many unknowns.
I feel like they are just kinda guessing at this point..

I thought the disease was relatively harmless (rash/flu like symptoms) for those who aren't pregnant. And that the incubation period is 12 days. If you're leaving relatively soon and not TTC for a few months, I'd still go. I'd double check the facts though and make sure it's not something that lives in your system for awhile. Maybe speak to your OB. They seem to be taking this very seriously, as well they should.

I'm pretty sure they are recommending that to women who live in areas where there is an outbreak.
The danger is in contracting Zika while pregnant so as long as you are not pregnant during your vacation you should be fine to come home and TTC as usual. Or at least that is my understanding of it.
I would be more concerned with the idea that those mosquitoes could possibly be HERE during the summer.

I would go but postpone TTC. If you do go I would wait a cycle or two to TTC in case you were infected so your body isn't acutely infected if you get pregnant.

My BF is a nurse and I had her ask a million doctors for me because I was worried after hearing 2 years. We have a trip planned in April. Their recommendation is to wait one cycle after you return before TTC. They say the virus can live in you for up to 10 days. The 2 years is regarding people who currently live in countries affected. It's always worth giving your OB/GYN a quick call to hear their recommendation. They'll know better than us!!

Once the virus is out of your system (about 2 weeks) you are clear to ttc, so the 1 month wait, makes sense.

I would go. Zika has been around for decades. The relationship between zika and microcephaly is casual at best. There has been a lot more going on in Brazil that could be the cause of microcephaly.

I thought the connection between Zika infection and microcephaly was pretty clearly established. In fact, I read that the babies exposed to zika also have particularly severe brain damage. Am I wrong?

It has not be proven zika is the cause.
From the World Health Organization on Monday:
"The experts agreed that a causal relationship between Zika infection during pregnancy and microcephaly is strongly suspected, though not yet scientifically proven. All agreed on the urgent need to coordinate international efforts to investigate and understand this relationship better."

No offense meant, but are you seriously using this website for medical advice? It is fringe conspiracy propaganda. The CDC lies and the real cause of microcephaly is the Tdap vaccinations used to induce childlessness in the third world population???
Um. ok. Even your own WHO quote shows that there is at the very least a strong correlation between Zika and microcephaly. They are simply saying they have not yet understood the mechanism as to HOW that happens.

I was not using that particular website for medical advice, I simply included it because it covered other possibilities. Like it or not, all the other possibilities are just as likely the cause of microcephaly. Zika virus has been around for decades and yet just now it is causing a major epidemic? You scoff at the idea it could be this new tdap vaccine, but this was something that was introduced 10+ months ago and now all these babies are being born with microcephaly. But somehow it is more plausible that mosquitos are spreading it. Not to mention Brazil uses a ridiculous amount of chemicals that aren't even legal in most other countries.

It is a theory along with many others, but the hype/focus is all being placed on zika (before that it was measles in Disney, Ebola, etc.) You obviously don't agree and I respect that. CDC's recommendation for TDAP during pregnancy started in 2012. How many cases of microcephaly have there been in the US since? I don't know anything about microcephaly but if the TDAP is generally given halfway through the 3rd trimester, isn't the brain/skull already developed by that point? (Genuinely asking)
I was reading an article about the outbreak in Brazil. It seems many of the women who had babies with microcephaly reported having a rash early in their pregnancy similar to the rash caused by Zika.
Regardless, pregnant women and women who are TTC and don't want to postpone, should avoid travel to affected areas. It's also hard to take a link between TDAP and the microcephaly outbreak seriously when it's only being posted about on anti-vaxx or conspiracy theory websites.

I agree with the pp- these posts should be deleted. Someone might read this misinformation and believe it.
And by the way-- it's causal. A causal relationship. They strongly suspect Zika CAUSES microcephaly. Not casual, like Zika and microcephaly are just minimally aquainted.

This will be my last comment. There has been no proof one way or another that zika is the cause for microcephaly. There are several possibilities IMO as well as the opinion of others. I was simply making that information known. The tdap vaccine COULD play a role in this. Big pharma does nothing but benefit from this situation. Do some research on it. Not all batches of vaccines are alike and there has been little to no testing done to prove the safety of the vaccine. That is not misinformation, they are facts.
