wwyd? re: formula
my dd in the first few months of her life had TONS of issues with every different kind of formulas... we went to GI doc who then put her on neutramigen she has been doing fantastic with it and is now on zantac for the refulx but they are assuming that she wont need the meds after she reaches 6 months old (she is currently 5.5 months old) i was at both the GI doc and PED office today. the gi said i can start lowering her intake of fomrula since shes doing well with solids that she only needs 18-24oz per day.
now the ped agrees with the amount. but has suggested that i should start trying to transition her to reg. milk based fomrula starting at 6 months because we want her to eventually take whole milk at 1 years old. When tested for a milk protien allergy (apparently they told us that she did have it now they are saying she doesnt) that it was prob. just an intolerance. and it was suggested to start slowly by mixing 1oz of reg formula in with the neutramigen and slowly increase the reg. and decrease the neutramigen. obvioulsy if she were to start us with the shooting diarrhea or vomiting again then we would go right back to all neutramigen
so my question is would you try to transition back to milk based formula and see how it goes? or follow the rule that "if its not broken dont fix it"

Re: wwyd? re: formula
My kids all had a dairy allergy ( hives, vomitting, etc....) so when it came time to take them off formula ,I stayed with reg soy milk until they were around 2 ! It wasn't something suggested to me by the doc ( he didnt suggest anything) just something I felt comfortable with ! Now my 2 older ones take in regular dairy products since they were 2 !
ETA: I used similac soy

Re: wwyd? re: formula
hi, my ds had some formula issues but we never went as far with the nutramigen. we have him on Nestle Good Start. he is great with it and its milk based but uses a whey protein that is easier on the tummy. and its one of the cheaper ones out there. good start gentle plus is what we use.

Re: wwyd? re: formula
you can try gentlease. It is an in between formula from routine to hydrolyzed. It has partially hydrolyzed proteins and reduced lactose, so its a nice transition from a hypoallergenic formula.

Re: wwyd? re: formula
Hey Megan
I would do as the dr. said and mix some of the milk based into the other and slowly increase. As you said, if you see my little cabbage patch girl getting upset, you'll stop.
You do want her to be able to drink milk at 1 if she can. Not so sure if you need to start just yet though. I would wait until about 9 months old

Re: wwyd? re: formula
ds went to the lactose free formula- then the lacote free rice starch added one......
now after 6 months old we started transitioning him back... i started doing 1 part regular & 2 part lactose free...then half and half, then 2part reg 1 part lactose free... today i started All regular- he's been fine. knock on wood.....
i totally agree with wanting them back to the regular stuff to make it easier for the milk transfer..

Re: wwyd? re: formula
I would try mixing it in with Gentlease first. There's a HUGE difference between Nutramigen and regular formula. If he's ok with the mixing of Gentlease, gradually increase the Gentlease to Nutramigen ratio. Once she's ok with full-on Gentlease then maybe try at 9 months or so to mix the Gentlease with a regular formula. If she tolerates that mix, then gradually increase until it's all regular formula. Then she should be ok with milk by age 1. If she has issues with any of this then of course discontinue it and stay with what works. But again, I wouldn't mix the Nutramigen with a regular formula just yet, I think the difference between the two is too big, especially reading of Abby's difficulties. Good Luck!
