WWYD: Peditrician

My DS was sick about two weeks ago and Peditrician dx him with Croup and a mild/severe case of childhood asthma.

Now, my DS is sick again for the past two days. I take him to the Peditrician this morning and he says my DS has Fifth Disease. I tried to explain that my DS cheeks get red from being in the warm car, but he insisted that he definitely had Fifth Disease.

I brought him home and he started vomiting, so I contacted the pedi back and let them know.

Well, one of the other doctors that he didn't see today gets on the phone and tells me to bring him over, because Dr. S left for the day and he would have to see him.

So, I pack him up and back to the doctor we went,
I get there and just burst out in tears, because I feel so helpless and overwhelmed by nobody knowing what was really wrong.

They took his temp, it was 102.9 and checked everything out and told me to meet him on his office. He said it doesn't appear to be Fifth Disease. It seems to be just a viral infection. He said with Fifth he would not be running a fever and appear so weak and sick.

I loved this office and the doctor I went to this morning, but it seems like nobody has a clue what was wrong with my DS, which is a very uneasy feeling. Also, to make me go back there. Couldn't he just of read through his medical records. Also, he was going to prescribe him cough medicine, but then said I should give him Robtussin DM adult form in 1ml. I thought that was crazy and my sister insisted to give us be prescription.

Would you change pedictrician? Should I go for a second opinion?

I feel like nothing was resolved and my little boy is so sick.

aw, I'm so sorry you're dealing with so much anxiety. It's already so stressful enough when our little ones are sick, but to add incompetence to it just really makes it 100x worse. If it were ME, I'd change doctors honestly, because I wouldn't be secure in their ability to correctly care for my child. I'd be afraid that next time would be worse - that they'd prescribe something dangerous, just out of carelessness and not checking charts properly. When DD was only 2 months, her doctor started telling me some really dumb stuff that completely contradicted everything I already knew to be accurate. Little things, like using sunscreen on her body & face, strong chemical shampoos for cradle cap, etc, etc. That alone scared the crap out of me. What other 'bad' advice was he going to give me in the future that next time I won't know any better than to trust him with? So I went on the search once again and did end up with a really good pediatrician that I feel much more comfortable with, though she is 40 miles further away than the original one. Trusting your child is safe in somebody's care though is truly priceless, and worth the drive. So go with your gut on this one. If deep down you don't feel your child will be properly cared for, then look elsewhere. Only you as Mom can answer that question.

IF it were me i would change and get a second opinion.

I would follow your gut as the above posters have said, if you dont like what they have to say or you think they didnt handle it properly then without a doubt my child would be going elsewhere.

I would go to pm pediatrics and get a second opinion. then I would definitely consider looking for a new dr.
