WWYD, parking incentive & work
so where I work there is going to be limited parking in a few months, since they are building a new building where there is a current parking lot.... they are asking employees that want to participate to park in a lot that is 15 minutes away, then take a shuttle to/from work. To compensate, they will give you 5 extra vacation days... I am conflicted because it is 5 vacation days, but I am just worried in case there is an emergency and I have to leave right away (my DS is 7.5 months), it will take me maybe 30 minutes to get back to my car (wait for shuttle then have to get back to the car)... WWYD?
ETA I'd have to make sure I got here a little earlier and would prob get home a half hour-40 min later

absolutely! 5 days is well worth it.
Emergencies are rare and even if you had your car in a lot right next to your job, unforeseen traffic, ruptured water main, etc etc could delay you 20 minutes.

ETA it would start this Fall. The vacation days would be 5 extra days per year from Fall 2013-2014, and im guessing 2014-2015

For me, that's not enough compensation. If it adds an hour onto your day, in less than 2 weeks you will have worked an extra full day (hours-wise).
5 days a year isn't enough to make up for that, IMO.

I'd take the vacation days...
In an emergency situation, maybe taking a cab or having someone drive you to the lot would work and be quicker than the shuttle?

So, the parking is over a mile away ?
At first, I thought YES for 5 days.
But, things to consider :
- When it's raining, snowing, freezing you will be waiting outside for that shuttle.
-If you have to leave early, suddenly with the shuttle still be available ?
- are you someone that gets to work early, or will the extra 30 in the am kill you.
they had a shuttle at my old job. 1/2 the time I ended up walking because I'd rather be walking than standing around waiting for the shuttle to come back.
On the plus side, it's a way to sneak in 30 min of exercise if you could walk it. :)

She is giving up:

~ 5 hours a week

If it was for 2 years probably not. If you get home early anyway, maybe. If you get home at 4 but now its 4:45 that's one thing but if get home after 6/7 it may be too late.

Totally not worth it.
I paid cash to keep my sweet parking space while I was on maternity leave. If you are going to stay working for a while, that shuttle times does multiply!

As someone who used to commute back and forth to the city I say do it but then the new me who works 10 minutes from home and parks right out the front door of our one story building I hesitate...
Can you try it out for a few weeks to see how it goes and then change your mind?
