WWYD? Electricity during construction (rental)

For the past 7 weeks or so, my landlord has been doing construction on our rental property (while we've been living in it).

We've been living here for a year and a half and the renovations he is doing is pretty major (basically converting from oil heat to individual gas units with forced hot air/central air).. we are psyched for the changes.. (not looking forward to paying for our heat.. but whatever). And he also replaced the roof (went from flat to gable roof)

Needless to say, the past 7 weeks has been hell. We lost our linen closet (that is where the furnace is now) along w/ a corner of each closet (where the duct work is for the heat/AC). The painting, sheetrock & spackeling (sp) and the constant dust has been crazy- I have two small kids and we've all been coughing.

Anyway- since construction started the workers have been plugging into my outlet in the back patio- running generators for whatever they did on the roof, etc.

Last month the electric bill was $95 (high for December) but I let it go.

Recent bill came and it's $150 (it should be $50-75).. my usage from last year to this year has tripled.

Should I mention this to my landlord? Suck it up? What would you do?

I am excited for the changes.. don't get me wrong.. our window units weren't the greatest (we have 2 floors and it never really gets cool in here) and while it is going to stink to pay for heat, it wont' stink losing heat b/c he's late filing the oil tank.. I'm grateful this is finally getting done... but still, I'm sort of miffed I have to pay for the electricity to run the project, KWIM?

I would most definitely bring your bills, as well as last years, to your landlord. He should atlest split the difference with you. I am a landlord and I wouldn't expect my tenant to not only be inconvenienced but to also have to pay for renovations.

I totally agree. This is his expense and you should tell him that you are taking the differences off of your next months rent. That is what a landlord should do. I would never expect our tenant to pay for the projects we are doing on our house. You have the right to take the money off of your rent. Give him a copy of the two bills and they difference between last year and this year. Just tell him straight out, I'm taking the difference off of our next rent. Hopefully you have a nice landlord. GL!
