WWYD? Bumpers in crib at 10 months?
My DS is almost 10 months old. He is all over his crib, even in his sleep, and he is banging his head (hard sometimes) repeatedly at bedtime/naptime and when he wakes. I worry about this constantly bc I hear loud booms every time he hits his head (as someone who works with kids with head/brain injuries, this really scares me).
We have breathable bumpers but I am debating whether or not to put the regular bumpers in the crib just to cushion his head a bit. But, I worry about SIDS. Also, he moves so much that we can’t use the AngelCare anymore bc we gets too many false alarms. WWYD?

Re: WWYD? Bumpers in crib at 10 months?
it's a personal decision - Sean has had bumpbers (normal ones) since day one.
I just took them out yesterday b/c DH has to lower the crib and until he does that, they went b/c Sean climbs on them to try to climb out of the crib - but he was up at least 3x last night b/c he likes to sleep scrunched in the corner against the bumpers - and he was uncomfortable last night (he's 15 months)
so I can't wait to get those things back in !

Re: WWYD? Bumpers in crib at 10 months?
We took regular bumpers out of DS crib when he was 4 months old and went to breathable bumpers. Never looked back.
When DD was born we went straight to breathable bumpers.
Honestly, my DS banged his head on the crib more times than I can count and he has never been injured from it. I think the impact of tipping over when he was learning to sit up was greater. I never once worried about him banging his head.
IMO, the thought of SIDS scares me MUCH more than him bumping his head.
I would keep the breathable bumpers in.

DD is 9 months and has had the regular bumpers since day one (day one being around 4 months when she started sleeping in her crib). If she moved around more in her sleep when she was younger I probably would have switched to the breathable bumpers but up until recently, she pretty much stayed where you put her. Now at 9 months I'm comfortable with the regular ones so I don't think we'll switch them.

Both my boys have had regular bumpers in since day 1. You have to do what is comfortable to you.

Personally, we are planning to leave the breathable bumpers in for a LONG time. We aren't at that stage yet where we have to worry about Kieran banging his head, but I know we will be there pretty soon. We asked the ped at our last visit about putting regular bumpers in and she said that the impact/ potential injury from falling in the crib and hitting his head is far less dangerous than the potential injury or worse from using regular bumpers. That being said, I know that every docotr has different opinions on it, and I think it's important to have a ped that you trust and align with their opinions. I would definitely talk to your ped about it and see what they recommend.

I am realkly scared of SIDS (i still watch to make sure he's breathing so I guess no bumpers. Hopefully he learns quick.

Re: WWYD? Bumpers in crib at 10 months?
I have used regular bumpers since she went into the crib around 3 mo old. DD moves A LOT in her sleep and I was afraid she would hit her head. For the first 2 months I spent my nights getting up every 20 minutes to check her

There is an alternative called wonder bumpers. Never seen them in person but they look cool. BRU sells them online.
ETA: The bumpers basically wrap around the crib bars. They come in different colors/patterns. Image Attachment(s):

I've had the regular bumpers in since he was about 4 mos. I'm sure it stopped quite a bit of head bruises!

Re: WWYD? Bumpers in crib at 10 months?
It's a personal decision....but for ME we ahev had regular bumpers ever since DS has been in his crib. He is 25 1/2 months now.....I will NOT remove them until he uses them as a tool to climb out of his crib!

Re: WWYD? Bumpers in crib at 10 months?
I actually had the opposite problem. I removed them at 7 months because DS was standing up on them. When I took them out he kept banging himself for several days. He is very tall so climbing out of the crib was actually possible. I decided that him climbing out of the crib was scarier than him getting a few bumps and bruises.

Re: WWYD? Bumpers in crib at 10 months?
I've never had bumpers in DS's crib and i've heard him bump his head. However, he's never bumped his head hard enough to leave any kind of mark. My kid has a really hard head (and I know this because i've been head butted and he wasn't phased).

Re: WWYD? Bumpers in crib at 10 months?
we have regular bumpers in ds crib.
i also have the angelcare monitor and had to shut off the sensor bc ds sometimes curls into the corner and sets off the alarm.

Re: WWYD? Bumpers in crib at 10 months?
I've kept the bumpers in the crib since she went in the crib (3 months). Once she started rolling and literally sleeping up into them I tried removing them, but she kept bumping her head and would not sleep. I put them back in and she and I were both happy.

Re: WWYD? Bumpers in crib at 10 months?
We took the bumpers out when DD was 4 months old and put the breathable ones it. She is 2.5 and still has the breathable ones. If I put the regular ones back in I am sure she'd use them to launch herself out of the crib.

Re: WWYD? Bumpers in crib at 10 months?
We have two cribs and Syd has the breathable bumpers and Chloe has the regualr thick ones because she moves ALL over. With Noah I was a nervous wreck with bumpers, this time around I'm more relaxed and she does ok. I would get the bumpers
