WWYD - Birthday Gift

DD is invited to a b-day party for a classmate. I took her to the store to select a gift and she picked a Barbie doll because her friend plays with them. My concern is that the b-day girl is bi-racial, and the doll is not. At the Target store I went to, ALL the Barbie dolls were white. Chat Icon I looked online and Toys R Us has the same doll for double the price, but does have the AA doll. Looking at Target online, I might be able to the AA doll at a store @ 30 minutes away, and a store in Nassau County (I'm in Suffolk) definitely has it.

Would you exchange the doll or just leave well enough alone? I do have a gift receipt to include if the mom wants to exchange it.

I would exchange the doll, I feel uncomfortable buying my nieces white dolls.

I'd leave it, I see no problem with a white barbie

WWYD - Birthday Gift

Our friends have biracial daughters and they play with dolls of both races. I think it's fine.

My DD has mixed races she plays with. It is probably a good thing for kids.

I would definitely just leave it, I think it's the safer choice. There are no kids in my family that only play with black or Spanish Barbies. You should be fine.

If it helps, my niece is biracial and plays with white dolls. But if you really don't feel comfortable, or think it might offend her parents, then maybe pick out something else and convince your daughter that its a better gift than the doll.

Not knowing the people well enough to know what may or may not offend them, I would get a totally different gift. I wouldn't feel comfortable buying either doll and implying anything in either direction. This type of situation makes me uncomfortable.

Re: WWYD - Birthday Gift

Unless they have a bi-racial Barbie, I don't think exchanging it for an African American Barbie would make any difference
If she is bi-racial she is both white and African American, correct? so IMO you can't go wrong with either doll

I would return the doll and go with a Target gift card.

Re: WWYD - Birthday Gift

I'd give the child the gift you bought, and attache the gift receipt.

What you could POSSIBLY be implying by giving a doll as a gift?
Also, like another said, if she's bi-racial, I don't see how either doll is 'more' appropriate. It's a TOY - don't over think it Chat Icon

Am I missing something? I don't get how that is offensive. Why does the doll have to be the same race? I'm white and would have no problem with my daughter playing with a Black, Asian, bi-racial or white Barbie... I wouldn't think twice about it.

I'd just give it. If/When we have a DD, she'd be 1/2 Chinese, do they even make a Chinese barbie? She'll likely be playing with white barbies then!

My DD has dolls that are white and AA. It never occurred to me that it would be innaproppriate to get her a doll that is a different race. She dosent notice. Why would an AA doll be ok and not white if she is technically both?(If that is the case)

My dd is white and my white aunt bought her a black baby doll for Christmas. She wanted her to have variety lol. My best friend's daughter is bi racial and she plays with it all.

this is what I was thinking, my cousins are bi-racial and they are BOTH and identify as such. There are bi-racial children who appear 100% white and bi-racial children who appear 100% African American. Then there are bi-racial children who fall somewhere in the middle. If they are BOTH races, like my cousins, then there is nothing offensive about a white doll (although I dont think there is even if they werent bi-racial). My cousins always had white dolls and AA dolls. My daughter who is white, has AA dolls, white dolls, hisp. dolls and asian dolls. I think its fine.

Give her the doll. DD is Chinese and she plays with every type and color doll around. Kids do not care.
