Wow - not a single post about Chrysler filing for bankruptcy

so I guess we're never seeing the BILLIONS in tax payers money back

I hope they can re-invent themselves... really I do.

unions are ruining us! we cannot compete against foreign markets with unions. it's now a proven fact that extends beyond the auto industry to steel and many other industries.

If you are not for unions then you will have a problem with this. From what I heard, unions would own about 85% or so. Fiat would own 15%. But most likely Fiat's CEO would run the show.

I disagree. I don't think Chrysler is declaring bankruptcy because their workforce is unionized. Obviously, unionized workers earn more than their non-union counterparts, here and abroad, but that's been the case for many years. I think Chrysler's current situation has more to do with the credit crisis and poor sales rather than the UAW (who had, by the way, agreed to substantial concessions to avoid this situation).

I must add that as a former union organizer, it sort of breaks my heart to read your statement that unions are "ruining us." I know I am partisan, and you're certainly entitled to your view on this, but I have seen unions do so much to help workers and make their lives infinitely better that I cannot imagine an American middle class surviving without them. I recognize that there are also some bad unions out there, but all human institutions have their bad apples. My point is, that for the most part, I think the ideals of trade unionism are a fantastic thing, allowing workers to act collectively to earn better wages and benefits.

I understand that unions have their purpose, but this is a new world and union based companies are losing market share in a huge way!!! they simply cannot compete with foreign markets and even domestic ones that don't have all these enormous "perks". while the union head "fat cats" are living the high life, who's losing their jobs? how many factories have closed down because they are inefficient and or too expensive to operate?

And I also understand the points you make. I can only respond by stating that its difficult for American manufacturing companies (union and non union alike) to compete with foreign companies that do not have to abide by OSHA safety regs, child labor laws, overtime pay protections, minimum wage laws, the FMLA, environmental regs, or provide living wages, health benefits, pensions, paid vacations and paid sick days.

In my view, many of those items listed above are not merely "perks" but necessities and I believe people are entitled to them. Other items (like paid time off) really do make peoples lives BETTER!

What are we to do? Go back 100 years to compete with foreign companies who abuse workers, including children? Shall we put our kids on the assembly line at Chrysler to make things better? That cannot be the answer. There has to be some other solution. I hope we (as a country) can figure it out.

Re: Wow - not a single post about Chrysler filing for bankruptcy

my impression from obama's speech on the topic was that the unions made major consessions, as did the dealerships, and the suppliers.... in the end, they had to declare bankrupcy becuase a few of their lenders (hedge funds) refused to renegotiate. Since their investments were insured, they refused to take a loss at all....
