Would you..

This is a random name question, but would you name your child the same name as your cousin's child. The name is William, not a very unique name. We rarely ever see this cousin, maybe once a year. However, it's my dad's brother's grandson and we are very close to that aunt and uncle, just not close to that particular cousin. He's significantly older than us and has lived out of state for over a decade.

Re: Would you..

If that is the name you want/love, then i wouldn't let a cousin having the same name deter me, with the relationship you described

Re: Would you..

Thanks, I should add that it's not a name I'm totally in love with yet, just in the beginning stages of adding eliminating to a list. We had to eliminate our top boys name from our last pregnancy because I didn't want one with the same initial as DD's name, so we are starting off at square one this time around. I'm only 11 weeks so we have a TON of time to really decide. We'll be team green again so I don't even mind having one or two choices on both sides.

Re: Would you..

If this was a cousin you saw every month for family events, I'd be iffy about using it. But since it's someone you never see, then IMO it's fine.

No but that is because I would want my child to have a name completely different from any family member. Just a personal preference with me.

Re: Would you..

Different last name so it seems acceptable to me. My sister had a name reserved for her baby (didnt know the gender) that I wanted. I was due first. I passed up the name and then she had a girl. They would have been first cousins with different last names but we see each other all the time

Re: Would you..

I did.

I have a second cousin who has son with my son's name. The name was my grandfathers name and my DH's grandfather's name. It is similar to William in that it is a classic name. I went back and forth but ultimately we loved the name and used it.

My mom did the same 30 yrs earlier with my second cousin, ironic Chat Icon

Name your child whatever you want! My opinion is that the concept that someone somehow "owns" a name because they happened to name their child that first is silly. I have people in my family who feel like they have to "reserve" names, as soon as you announce you are pregnant they tell you "don't name the baby X, that is the name we are going to use if we ever have another baby and it's a boy/girl..." These people drive me nuts. Especially if it is a cousin you hardly ever see. JMHO

Re: Would you..

I just felt the need to respond .. because as someone who has been TTC for a few centuries now Chat Icon if a cousin used the names we wanted, I would still use them! That said.... the only cousins who have had babies over the years are my dh's cousins who we only see on holidays and they live about an hour and a half from us.

One of his cousins used a name we LOVE as her daughter's middle name. We still may use it! Eh I say just do what makes you happy!

yes,i would. in my family there are many cousins that are named the same name (ex, my brothers name is joseph and so is my mom's sister's son as well) since there is a tradition in our Italian family of naming after the grandparents (though i did not follow this). It hasn't really been an issue.
