Working mamas who pump...

this week will mark my 4th week back at work and I am struggling a bit with the pump. I'm able to pump enough to replace what my little guy eats while I'm gone but it takes me so long to get a decent yield when I'm pumping ang I have to use compression as well to eek out every last drop. I'm a nurse and I'm allotted time off my unit in 30 min increments to pump but it just isn't enough time to set up, pump, and clean up. Any tips on how to empty faster when pumping? I use a medals PISA.

I'm a teacher so I feel your pain about being stressed for time.

First off, I do not wash all the parts each time I pump. Instead, I keep them in a cooler in the fridge.

As for trying to get more out, I'd keep manipulating the expression mode to get a second let down. In the beginning, I found it necessary to do compressions as you described but eventually my body got better with the pump.

I did these same "techniques". Not washing between sessions really helped to save time.

I also had all the parts put together before I got to work, that way all I was ready to pump right away.

Good luck!

I had 15 minutes (when I was lucky) in between appointments and would come with several sets already set up ready to go in my nursing bag. I would pump- rinse parts quick in cold water (if I had time) then put in a bag to wash/clean thoroughly at home. Definitely don't have time for a real cleaning during the day.

Re: Working mamas who pump...

I've been back to work about 6-7 weeks now - I will say it took me a few weeks to adjust to pumping at work. I was EBF while I was home with him, so going to pumping so many times was an adjustment. Some things that help:

- As others said, I don't wash the parts until I get home for the next day - I keep them in the fridge in between pumps

- I set up the pump part w/ the next empty bottle when I finish the first session so the second one I'm ready to go

- I've been using a hands free bra - which I guess is a given, but when I used to pump at home I didn't do that and now it would be impossible without it

- I have to do compressions also. What also helps me is after the first let down when the milk stops flowing, I shut the pump off and sit there for a few minutes, and then put it on again. Usually I get a second flow after that.

My little guy is taking 6oz per bottle (he needs 3 while I'm at work) and usually I'm pumping two full bottles for him. So when I get home at night once he's nursed, I pump a little more, and then again in the morning before he wakes up to make up for the night before.

what the other moms said about refrigerating the parts. i'd throw them into a huge ziploc bag in the fridge. i woulddnt even bother rinsing.

id have faster let downs if i chugged water while i was on the let down phase of the pisa.
