Winter coat: Hood necessary?

I am trying to find DD (16 mos.) a winter coat. Old Navy is having a 50% off sale so their coats are only $21!! But - the one I like has no hood. Chat Icon

Do you think it's essential for the winter coat to have a hood? I'm thinking BTDT moms may have more insight into this than I do. Thanks! Chat Icon

Re: Winter coat: Hood necessary?

I always like my boys to have a hood.

They wear a hat, but then I pull the hood up too, to cover the backs of their necks, and for more head warmth.

But on windy days, the hood blows right off anyway.

But then I also use a scarf around the outside of the hood for stability.

Always get a coat with a hood for Julia, and now for Todd Jr too! Keeps there head and neck's warm.

Re: Winter coat: Hood necessary?

I prefer the detachable hood personally.

The wind sometimes goes right in the opening of the colar in the back of the neck.

Unless you use a scarf and a hat that covers the head/ears well.

Re: Winter coat: Hood necessary?

I think it will be OK. I think the amount of times the hood is actually used is minimal. If that coat didn't have a plush lined collar, I'd think her neck might get cold but you can pull that up and she will be fine.

This is kind of what I'm thinking, but I dunno!! Why must this be such a huge decision for me?! Chat Icon

Oh, and just for the record, here is the other coat I am considering (from LL Bean). Just about 3x the price, though! Chat Icon

I think its fine without a hood - just get a good hat with the flaps that cover the ears - and maybe a scarf for the neck.

Re: Winter coat: Hood necessary?

I do prefer hoods on coats, but I agree, that collar looks like it can be pulled up nicely and should keep her warm enough with a hat.

One step ahead has some of these that can help when its really cold, to keep their neck warm ( if you get a hood-less coat )

I do like hoods personally but they have their drawbacks ( they bunch up in the car-seat) and with DS's Gap jacket, sometimes the weight of his hood pulls back his jacket and his belly ends up sticking out Chat Icon

I always get a hood. I'm the mom who has her kid with a hat and the hood on.

My kids are older now, 7 and 9, so don't keep hoods on anyway, lol...but I always noticed that when they were younger, the hoods were about 10x too big for their heads. So I always just went with a hat.

I actually hate hoods on coats, especially for children, so I vote go for the coat you posted. I love them in hats anyway!

Thanks, everyone! Incidentally, today my friend offered me a hand-me-down LL Bean coat with a hood Chat Icon, so I'm going to go ahead and buy the Old Navy one! Chat Icon
