Wine Experts...need your help!
DH just got "Doctor's orders" to drink a glass of red wine every night to help lower his cholesterol.
He's a beer drinker....
any suggestions on what he should try? LI Wines are a no go...we live in GA and can't find them here.

Re: Wine Experts...need your help!
Maybe try a Shiraz or a Merlot/Cabernet mix...I'm not sure. I'm guessing those might be a little easier to start with?

I really like wines like Malbec and Zinfindel. My advice is to just experiment. You can get really good wine for around $10-$20 a bottle. Just go to the store and pick up anything that looks interesting or ask the clerk for suggestions.

Re: Wine Experts...need your help!
For reds-do you like light bodied or icher-I am a fan of richer wines.
If you like dry or light you can go with Italian-Valpolicella, Chianti, etc.
Also Shiraz from Australia and NZ tend to be light
For the richer ones I love Red Zinfandel( a good inexpensive one is Rancho Zabaco, Kunde Old Vines is pretty goo. If it is labeled Old Vines it tends to be a bit better.
I also love chateneuf du pape but it is $$$ usually.
Gallo of Sonoma makes decent wines at a good price
I love Coppola wines especially his Claret. That shoudl get you started-Preshy 7 and Lrusso are also wine drinkers so maybe you could FM them.

Rancho Zabaco is good. I had it for the first last week on our cruise. Also, Valley of the Moon Syrah is good and inexpensive.

My DH is a big time beer drinker. The only wine that he really loves is Blackstone Merlot. I like it too. It's tasty and it's cheap!

Re: Wine Experts...need your help!
Try Yellowtail Merlot, is not very dry for a red wine. All Yellowtail wines are good, and very inexpensive.

Re: Wine Experts...need your help!
Cheap red wines that are surprisingly good:
Bogle-Merlot Estancia-Cab or Cab/Merlot Rock Rabbit-Syrah Sterling-Cab
Very yummy. He's sure to like any one of them.

I agree. My dh did not like red wine at first and pinot noir was a great wine to start with. I LOVE red zinfandel (Any Ridge zin is great, or Seghesio mmm....) but I tend to find that zin has a stronger taste than merlot or pinot noir. Beaujolais is very fruity tasting, might be too sweet for a beer drinker.

Re: Wine Experts...need your help!
I also like Pinot Nior and the Yellowtale Shiraz. Do they have any vineyards in GA. maybe you could a wine tasting that way you dont have to spend money on a bottle of wine to find out you dont like it and end up throwing it out. Thats how I found out I liked Pinot Nior. But trial and error is I think really the only way.
