wine and pumping...

I am going to the vineyards next week for a get together. How can you pump and drink wine? I cant remember how it works. I dont make a lot of milk so I dont want to dump. I dont plan on drinking a huge amount.

Re: wine and pumping...

From what ive read (and what I did last weekend) was pump every 3 hours. After I started drinking I dumped it but I believe you can have one drink an hour and be fine. (I was drinking more so I dumped) I read if you are okay to drive, then you are ok to breast feed. If you feel the alcohol effects then you need to dump.

You don't NEED to dump if you time it right (pump, then drink- just not too much and 3 hours later you can pump again) The alcohol doesnt sit in your breastmilk. When its out of your blood, its out of your breast milk

I hope that helps!

I went in a wine tour a couple of weeks ago and this is what I did...I drank enough in the beginning felt a little buzzed and then pumped and dumped that. Then I are lunch didn't feel buzzed anymore had a glass of wine and then 3 hours later went home and bf. everything was fine!

Re: wine and pumping...

Alcohol runs through your milk like it runs through your blood..so that means it also leaves your milk like it leaves your blood....so the saying is "if you are ok to drive , you are ok to pump/breastfeed!

I never dumped...not necessary ... Just wait until the alcohol leaves your system and you should be fine! Unless you feel like getting wasted....Chat Icon a few glasses will NOT affect your milk or your baby...but just to feel better I would pump RIGHT before you begin drinking and then wait to pump or breastfeed a number of hours later and you should be fine...if that is like missing one feeding...your body/supply should be just fine!

Chat Icon have fun!

I never dumped. Can't waste the precious milk. I never drank more than 1 glass of wine (never had hard liquor). I would just time it. Feed baby before you leave; pump if you can too to completely empty your breast. Then have a drink. If you wait 3 hours to pump again (if you're stil away) then you should be fine. If you feel a little tipsy offer the baby the bottle of pumped milk from earlier in the day and wait a little longer to pump or feed again.

I would pump before drinking and it should be out of your system after maybe about 1-2 hours

That's what I would do. I wouldn't dump if you are haing the equivalent of one glass an hour.
