Windows...

We are just about ready to close on our house, and the very first thing we are doing is replacing all of the windows...(we actually got a rennovation grant from the state; they determine whats needed and pay the contractor for it to be done!)

The contractor has come, measured and counted everything out; they are just waiting for us to close to order the windows...

We were thinking; it would take about a week for them to come in (as per contractor) and then how long does it usually take to install them?

Does the weather/time of year effect the installation??? Everyone keeps saying; what are you going to do if they cant replace the windows because its too cold...???...

The contractor never mentioned the weather being an inssue- BUT we originally thought we were closingin OCTOBER...Chat Icon

Also... (and this could be a really stupid question, but since Ive never done this before...Chat Icon ) our plan was to- get the windows done, then paint, then carpets, then move in.... If the windows get held up; would it be really dumb to paint before they get replaced????

I can't see installing new carpets and painting AFTER we move our furniture in and I really really want to get in (and/or get out of my IL's houseChat Icon Chat Icon )

Re: Windows...

we are getting new windows in our master bed in 2 weeks. we did the floors and painted. the window installers will be very neat as they always do this type of work. They told us less than a day, but that's just for 2 windows. we will be living there at that time

Re: Windows...

Depending on the size and number of windows, they can probably be done in 2 or 3 days if you're doing an entire house. The weather doesn't really matter (they might want to wait a few days if another blizzard comes through, though... Chat Icon Chat Icon ). They take a few windows out, then replace them, so you're not left with holes in the walls overnight or anything.

If your windows are old, which I assume they are, since you're replacing all of them, they are probably not up to current code, meaning you will need bigger windows than you currently have, at least for bedrooms. That means they will have to do a little cutting of the drywall. My contractor was very neat when doing the retrofit windows, but there are still sections of drywall that needed to be patched after they were done. Nothing major, but you'd have to repaint those sections.
