why is my 1 year old so clingy?

I can't do anything that I need to do because my DS is so clingly. He used to only be clingy around strangers & wouldn't let anyone else but me hold him. If we were around other family & friends he would immediately hold on to me for dear life. But this past month or so, it's gotten worse. If I am in the room, he will not even let DH hold him. If DS is playing with his toys for a little bit & he happens to spot me, he will come & grab at my legs to pick him up. He constantly wants me to hold him. He is a very cuddly child but I can't get anything done around the house.
Any tips for me? Why is this getting worse as he gets older?

DS did the same thing and it ended up just being a phase - I think we went through it for a good month. He would scream if I left the room and he would hang to me when i would try to do stuff around the house. One thing that helped was if he started off with daddy - in the morning or after a nap - so I would be out, or he wouldn't see me and he was ok with just daddy. But once he saw me then forget it lol! Eventually it got better - he still clings sometimes but it has improved a lot.

It's a phase. DD is super clingy and she is 19 months.. its gotten a tad bit better but she's a loving and cuddly baby, so I think she just wants be me in near her.
