Why is an exersaucer ok but not a walker?
I hear and read how walkers are so bad for baby's development but a lot of people use jumpers/exersaucers but isnt that the same thing except the baby cant walk around? why is the exersaucer ok and not a walker?
ETA: unless of course the point is that the baby is getting a false walking experience...is this why they are bad?

Walkers get a bad rep as well because people don't use them properly - like at the top of a flight of stairs for example.

I think it's because walkers may delay walking, or so I've heard/read. There's also the safety issues that can come up, in particular stairs.

Re: Why is an exersaucer ok but not a walker?
According to my girls physical therapist, walkers and jumpers are bad for their proper leg muscle development. I think it has to do with their toes/feet and hips. Those pieces of equipment encourage them to be on their toes and that is bad. If you are using and exersaucers it is important that they are low enough to be flat on their feet.

The PT i work with also said Walkers are not great for development because of the position babies use when walking in a walker. In order to propel the walker forward they often have to lean forward.

Re: Why is an exersaucer ok but not a walker?
I've read things about all of the equipment that allows baby's legs to dangle (including the exersaucer and baby carriers like the Bjorn) not being great for development due to pressure on the hips. We have an exersaucer, but I only put her in it for maybe 15 minutes per day. She loves the bouncer at daycare, but they make me a little nervous, so I don't have one in the house. As a previous poster said, the walkers are especially dangerous because people use them in stupid places, like near stairs, and don't supervise their children, leading to accidents.

I'm not sure there's truly a difference but I definitely agree that the legs dangling is not good no matter what equipment you're using. DD was born with hip dysplasia (meaning her hip joint was loose and was likely to slide in and out of the socket). She wore a harness for her first 3-4 months to keep her legs somewhat spread. Once she finished with the harness I was told no restrictions whatsoever. However, I've read material warning against anything that places the hips in an unnatural positions. That can include the carseat, stroller, bumbo, walkers, jumpers, bounces, etc. I would just limit the amount of time you use anything. We usually stick to about 15 minutes at a time in the jumper or excersaucer. I try to keep her feet flat while she's in them.

The instructions for our excersaucer said they should be on their toes (not that I follow that).

Re: Why is an exersaucer ok but not a walker?
Honestly, we used the a walker (not an excersaucer) and DS was a little delayed with walking (14 months) but my feeling was that using a walker was not going to stop DS from ever walking in life and he had so much fun in his walker.

The instructions for our excersaucer said they should be on their toes (not that I follow that).
Ours said that they should at least be able to touch the floor with their toes, at minimum, not that they couldn't be flat-footed.
