Why do some parents delay or split the MMR?

Just curious if is it because this is the vaccine that most kids get a reaction from?

DO you delay it so that you do not give another vaccination with the MMR?

The MMR is the one that was believed to have a link to autism. Some people delay it and others split it up. My ped gives it at 18 months. The link has "officially" been proven false but I think a lot of moms still think eh you never know.

Yup, that's exactly the reason. I gave DS the MMR at 18 months. They give it at 15 months, but he was sick around that time. No reaction besides a little rash on his leg and was sick a week later, but that had nothing to do with the shot. He was getting 4 molars in.

Didn't know they split it? My Ped doesn't and I don't think I ever heard of that.

I think they used to split it but my sister in law said her ped told her that the manufacuter no longer splits it- so she had to give it all in one shot.

Yes, that's right- I read that the manufacturer of the shot stopped making them separate so now you have no choice. I should have said that's why some parents USED to split it up. I remember the article was about kids who had gotten certain single doses and then were stuck getting the whole thing over again b/c the single doses were no longer available for the separate ones they still needed!

my ped offers it at 15 months and unless DS is sick at that time, I'm not deferring it.

They used to offer it split when it was still unsure whether it was linked to autism. now that it has been confirmed that there is no link, they don't offer the split.

I think my Dr offers it at 12 months but I think I'm going to ask to give it at 15 months also. I'm just a little nervous because of the mumps outbreak a litte while ago.

Re: Why do some parents delay or split the MMR?

From what I've read and researched I don't believe there is a specific link to any vaccine and autism. Especially with all that's come out about the "false research" and the doctor that did most of the MMR work falsified the data and had no studies to back up his theory.

But I do think that injecting foreign element into a baby is stressful on the body. If possible Id get it split up, or delayed until he's a little older, I would. But I don't stress it, because DS handles shots really well. He's big and tall for his size and handles them fine.

I think you and your doctor need to think about your baby as an individual in this case. Evaluate patient history and family history and make a sound decision on that, not just what other people do and say.
