Why are so many anti-flouride? What's the scoop?
This came up again on a recent thread, people not wanting to give their children flouride toothpaste EVER (I get the early "dont swallow it" age).
I know there has been some press on flouridated water and questioning whether it's safe but I never thought there was an issue with flouride toothpaste?
Am I missing something?

There is some info on flouride in this thread Including links to more info. The discussion is about flouride in vitamins but the info is still useful.
ETA: also, sodium flouride was first introduced into the market as an insecticide in the late 1800s and was also used in rat poison in the early 1900s I believe.

It is a deadly poison and is more toxic than lead. There is no concrete proof it does anything for your teeth. There is no reason it should be in toothpaste.

It is a deadly poison and is more toxic than lead. There is no concrete proof it does anything for your teeth. There is no reason it should be in toothpaste.
Bit of a bold statement... do you have any articles about this?

so glad you posted this, I was  at that post yesterday too- I never heard anything beyond not giving it to kids before they spit, etc
when we were kids, I had flouride treatments at the dentist like yearly

Thanks but this is specifically about drinking water... is there research about toothpaste? I would think the fact that it isn't (or shouldn't be) ingested makes a big difference?

Not a bold statement really, it is slightly less toxic than arsenic. I just know growing up my brother and I never had fluoride treatments or toothpaste and to date we've each only had one cavity. Mine in my wisdom tooth at age 28.
There is tons of info out there about it.

That Huffington Post headline is so misleading. The research did not show that fluoride causes IQ to be lower. It just shows a correlation between the two. Rule 1 that I learned in my undergrad (and grad) stats classes: Correlation does not imply causation.
Now, I have not read the whole original study, and I don't know much about fluoride at all, but I felt the need to point that out.

This is where everyone gets confused. Drinking it and rubbing it on your teeth are two different things. And ANYTHING in high doses can be lethal. You can die from drinking too muhc water too, doesn't mean no one should drink water anymore. If there was actual evidence that fluoride in toothpaste was indeed harmful it would be pulled. When was the last time you heard of someone dying from fluoride poisoning?

I don't think it is necessarily fluoride poisoning...I think it is that it contributes to other causes. Not to mention it is also toxic. With regards to it being pulled if it was not safe....I find that hard to believe, especially after Monsanto was just signed!!

The problem is that the fluoride is not just rubbed on your teeth. It is absorbed into the body through the mouth. Flouride is a cumulative toxin. The body can only process and excrete about half of the flouride introduced into the body. The rest accumulates in body tissues. When they decide what a "safe" level of flouride is, there is no way of knowing how much flouride a person is absorbing From tap water, bottled water, toothpaste, supplements, etc.
Also, I do not trust our government when it comes to determining what is safe for consumption. There are many things that are approved then later pulled when people get sick or die. My safety is not their motivation, money and politics are.
