Why are Drs so induction crazy?
Don't know if its because I'm pregnant or what but reading different baby boards and talking to friends in the last couple of years pushing pitocin on patients seems like 2nd nature and I don't get it. I understand if its a medical emergency but it seems every child is a medical emergency and mom needs to be induced. Friends of mine have horrible experiences will pitocin and dh and I are anti force this child out. Seems babies aren't allowed to stay in and cook anymore. I don't get it. I'm halfway through my 37w and have already had people ask me if I plan to be induced for convienence sake. No thank you.
Am I the only one noticing this or bothered by it?

Re: Why are Drs so induction crazy?
this is a big controversy! I watched this video called the business of getting born and its crazy! drs push C-sections and Pitocin because of insurance and they get more money for it!! they are also trying to get you out of the hospital ASAP. I do believe these alternatives are necessary if some emergency happens but I have been noticing this as well. Its kind of bothersome but as long as you stick with your plan and you don't need it because there is an issue you should know your patient rights and know you don't have to take it!

This bothered me too! Luckily, I had DD without any interventions and my Dr was fairly anti-induction, but it seems that everyone I know has had to be induced. I know that sometimes it is a medical emergency, but I just can't believe how commonplace it is these days.

Re: Why are Drs so induction crazy?
Yes! I am extremely bothered by it (for me)!
I have been offered it by my doctors at every appointment and they keep trying to use it as a fear factor- I had a very quick birth with ds (like 30 minutes after getting to the hospital) and they keep saying that I'll never make it this time.
I am terrified of induction- I mean if I have to and its medically necessary- ok, but not for me otherwise

Re: Why are Drs so induction crazy?
Yep, ITA. This time I'm going for a vbac, switched to a practice that is actually vbac friendly, not just because THEY say so but also because a bunch of people I know actually had vbacs and natural births (my friend just recently had her baby at 42 weeks 4days). I'm a part of my local ICAN chapter after my first DD and we always talk about how commonplace inductions and C/Ss are nowadays, I am FAAAR from being a crunchy/granola mom but I do feel badly that many people don't realize the benefits of letting your body go into labor.

Re: Why are Drs so induction crazy?
I can't even imagined! my sil wanted to go all natural but they ended up inducing her because she wasn't dilating she said the pain is so excruciating she couldn't handle it and ended up getting epidural. I also heard that the epidural slows labor. Its scary. I haven't heard any of these options by my doctor so far I hope I don't hear them either

Re: Why are Drs so induction crazy?
I was induced with DS at 41 weeks bc there was no sign of him coming. They were estimating a 9 lb baby, so I was induced. The epi did not slow my progress at all. DS came out at 7 lbs 15 oz.
With DD, they scheduled my induction for 41 weeks, but I went into labor on my own at 40w 4 days and had an epi. Epi again didn't slow my progress at all.
With this baby, I'll probably request no induction and just let the baby come as he/she wants.

I think it is also a liability thing. The longer the baby is in there the more chance that something can go wrong, so if they feel it is safer to take the baby out than leave them in they suggest induction. I was induced with DD1 due to low fluids (they were very low) so it was actually medically necessary, and I am petrified of being induced again. It was long and painful!

I agree with all of this.
I personally chose to use a midwife because their birthing plans were more in line with what I want to do. I don't begrudge anyone who uses an OB and/or induces, I just want to do things the way I want and let my body do what its naturally going to do. If I need some help, I'm OK with it, but I'm not going willingly in that direction from the get-go.

I think this is only the case if you're like...42+ weeks. Otherwise its perfectly safe to be late. My friends doc tried to push an induction on her at 38 weeks b/c the baby was potentially over 9 lbs.! Completely unnecessary IMO.
I personally think docs like inductions so they can schedule the birth at their convenience. Same reason they push c-sections.
Unless its REALLY medically necessary I wouldn't ever go for one.

Also, I have heard that the measurements at the end can be completely skewed in terms of weight anyways, so sometimes DRs will push an induction for a potentially 9lb baby that comes out weighing 7.5lbs.

I know a lot of moms who were told the 9 pounder and none weighed more than 7. It really bothers me.

Why are Drs so induction crazy?
I was induced at 39 weeks b/c it was the week before Christmas!!! I will admit at the time Im like "OK" lets get this done (plus I was so tired) but it did not work! I was on Pit for hours and on the highest dose..nothing was happening ...NOTHING. Dr offered me a c-section since I was in hospital already and I said "NO WAY" if baby is not ready then neither am I. I walked out of the hospital that night with an empty car seat. I was bummed but Im so glad I didnt have a c-section b/c 10 days later my water broke and had my DD 9hrs later vaginally. :)

this documentary single handedly guided to me to change from an ob/gyn practice to a midwifery team for my well woman care a few years ago - knowing i'd want to use them for when i had a baby.
i won't be induced unless i hit 42 weeks and have to be.
its not for everyone one but i love them.

I hear you, but I have a coworker who lost her baby at 40w bc the placenta detached, so I don't know that that is necessarily true all the time.

Re: Why are Drs so induction crazy?
I was induced due to medical needs. My ob wanted to make sure he could control me coming off my meds and that everything would go smoothly

Re: Why are Drs so induction crazy?
I had a failed induction at 40w4d, which resulted in a c-section. While at the time I could not wait to have my baby, if I could do it again, I would have tried to keep waiting it out. Will likely try for a vbac next time.

Re: Why are Drs so induction crazy?
I feel the same way. With my last my Drs offered to induce me three times, once bc I was due around the holiday so it would be "more convenient for me", 2) bc they baby was big and the third time was bc I was one day past my due date. I declined, DC came 5 days late, almost 9lbs but I delivered vaginally with 4 pushes and missed the holiday anyway. Barring a medical emergency, I told them thanks but no thanks, when the baby is ready they will come out and if they are too big to push them out, we will cross that bridge if and when we came to it.

Re: Why are Drs so induction crazy?
I had gestational diabetes with both of my pregnancies and was induced for both at 39 weeks. With diabetes you are basically running out of time because you risk the baby getting too big. So there is really no choice if you have GD and don't go into labor on your own. Labor with pitocin was hard and brutal.

Re: Why are Drs so induction crazy?
I watched the business of being born and wasn't entirely convinced by it. I knew i wanted a doctor. I knew I wanted to be in a hospital. I wanted to try to go with as little interventions as possible. But at 40 weeks 4 days my fluids were low so the best option was induction. I had the epidural because the pain was so strong. Once my water was broken and the epidural was in place I was actually finally progressing because I was able to relax and DD could move down. I had way more interventions than I thought I would but the end results was my beautiful baby girl. It's good to educate yourself on birthing options. It's not a one size fits all.
