Whooping Cough?
Do you know if it is required for family members to get this vaccination before they come to the hospital to see the baby? I'm due in Dec and delivering at NS Manhasset.

Re: Whooping Cough?
It's not required for anyone. It is suggested though. I just got my shot 3 weeks ago and DH and all other hospital visitors will be offered it then.

Re: Whooping Cough?
Thanks! DH's cousin had a baby this past winter and they said we all had to get the shots before coming to the hospital and that it was required. I had never heard of it before and was wondering if that was the norm.

Re: Whooping Cough?
It is never required but the mom and dad, and anyone who will be regularly around the baby should have it.

Either she heard/misunderstood wrong, or she is trying to make it seem its required.
There is no such requirement, at least "legally". I can't even imagine a hospital would require such a thing (they sure as heck will strongly reccommend it)
Because so many kids are now not being vaccinated its posing a very real risk and danger, especially since adults vaccination protection has worn off.
Baby or not its just a good idea.

Whooping Cough?
My doctor mentioned that my husband and I should get the shot before the baby actually comes. I'll be able to pass the immunity to the baby that will last until he gets the DPT shot at 6months. I'm also due in December. She also said that any family member who will be around the baby regularly should get it as well.

Re: Whooping Cough?
Thanks. I think they just wanted us to all have it so they said it was required.

Re: Whooping Cough?
It was not required at Winthrop, but recommended that I get it before I left. They recommended Dh go get it also, but they could not give it to him there. He never got it. When he goes for his physical in the next couple weeks, he will get it though.
