Whoopi defends Vick on her "View" Debut
Goldberg defends Vick in `View' debut

So much for the sedate alternative to Rosie O'Donnell on "The View."
Whoopi Goldberg used her first day on the daytime chat show Tuesday to defend football star Michael Vick in his dogfighting case.
Goldberg said that "from where he comes from" in the South, dogfighting isn't that unusual.
"It's like cockfighting in Puerto Rico," she said. "There are certain things that are indicative to certain parts of the country."
The Atlanta Falcons quarterback pleaded guilty to federal dogfighting charges last week, admitting that he provided money for a dogfighting ring that operated on his Virginia property and helped kill six or eight pit bulls. Vick grew up in Newport News, Va.
Goldberg was selected by series creator Barbara Walters to replace O'Donnell, whose stormy tenure on the ABC program lasted less than a year.
In the Vick discussion, Goldberg served notice that she won't shy away from controversy.
Co-host Joy Behar looked horrified at Goldberg.
"How about dog torture and dog murdering?" Behar asked.
For many people, dogs are sport, Goldberg replied, and it appeared it took awhile for Vick to realize that he was up against serious charges.
"I just thought it was interesting, because it seemed like a light went off in his head when he realized this was something that the entire country didn't appreciate," she said.
Vick has been suspended indefinitely by the National Football League and will be sentenced on the dogfighting charges in December. He apologized and asked for forgiveness upon entering his plea in federal court last week.

I am so sick of the "it's a cultural thing" argument. BS. It's ILLEGAL!!! It doesn't matter if it's "big in the south". It's ILLEGAL!!! Stop hiding under ignorance. Whoopi is a moron then!

Um, no. I've lived in the South for half my life and have NEVER come across a dogfight or known someone who has participated in one.

I don't even know what this means. "Indicative"? A talk show host should know how to talk.

I think the show is going to be more annoying with her on it. I think she thinks she has to come out of left field and be a "strong" host with strong opinions to help raise ratings or she'll be kicked to the curb.

I don't even know what this means. "Indicative"? A talk show host should know how to talk.
I think that's the proper use of the word indicative--meaning "serving to indicate". However, I think it should be indicative of & not indicative to.

let me start by saying that im not condoning Vicks actions AT ALL...what he did was disgusting and reprehensible. but i dont see why we all get upset over other people's opinions. just because she doesnt agree with the majority doesnt make her wrong for her beliefs. thats why the show is called "the view"...everyone is entitled to their own point of view and opinion.
i watched it live...she didnt annoy me nor was i shocked by her comments. i can appreciate a good debate and not take it personally.

I agree 100%!!! I don't care if it is her "view." Opinions can be wrong you know. She claims it's "cultural," and IMO that diminishes the seriousness and offensiveness of his disgusting behavior.
So, KKK rallies and cross burnings are also "indigenous" to the South (I think she meant indigenous, not indicative). Does that mean it is ok for people to do those things too?

exactly. It's one thing if it was her opinion. But to claim that something that is ILLEGAL is cultural is just BULL! That is not an excuse.
If she were to say that Vick being suspended (or whatever) was too harsh, I can respect that that is her opinion. But this statement is a bit different than just having an opinion.

i work in DC and ALOT of men I work with know LOTS about it--- its disgusting to even hear them talk of it-- and even more horrifying to know it still goes on... but i assure you it does....
