Who pumps at work...
and how does that work?
I had my office put a lock on my office door before I went on leave so I know I have privacy - but I am concerned about the commute on the LIRR with my pump in style, storing the milk and the time it takes. Those of you that do it - how much of a pain is it?

Re: Who pumps at work...
The biggest pain for me is remembering the ice pack for the milk. Other than that it is no more or less a PIA than pumping at home.

Re: Who pumps at work...
I've been back for a month. It has been going rather smoothly - the ice packs in my BM cooler have kept the milk nice & cool so far. I love having 10-15 min a couple of times a day to turn my brain off & do nothing while pumping. The only PITA part is washing all the pump parts & the baby bottles every night, but even that isn't so bad.

Re: Who pumps at work...
The first time I had to breastfeed at work, I had my own office. I would simply close the door and have my assistant tell people that I was unavailable.
The second time I did not have my own office and I worked in a basement. I was only 5 minutes away from my mother's house so I would run home and feed the baby or pump if he was sleeping.
I used an Avent Isis hand pump. I found it easier to use, quiet and more effective than the electric pumps that I had tried.

Re: Who pumps at work...
I actually pump at my desk. I have a closed off cube that is up against the back wall. I bought a privacy wrap to wear over me so it anyone does come around, they will not see anything anyway.
I pump about 3 times a day and to be honest with you I hate it but I will do anything for my little man.
I have a 40 minute ride back and forth to work, the milk stays fine in a little cooler with an ice pack

Re: Who pumps at work...
Just an FYI- don't be TOO concerned about keeping the milk cold. BM is OK at room temperature for a LONG time (10 hours according to Kellymom). Bring an icepack by all means, but don't worry about it being the right temp like you would with cow's mik.
I pumped at work for 6 months. Bringing the pump was a drag- but it's defintly doable. I also used one of those hands-free bras so that I could eat my lunch/ do work while I pumped.
Good luck!!

Re: Who pumps at work...
I pumped 3 times per day at work when I was BFing. I had the little cooler that came with the pump. Luckily we had a "special" fridge for the BFing mommies and they gave us a room.
Keep the milk in the cooler with the freezer pack and you will be fine.
It was a pain carrying the pump back and forth but it was $300 and I did not want to leave it at work. First it could have been stolen. Then I also needed it at home and if I would not go to work one day. You get used to it. You just do what you have to do.

Re: Who pumps at work...
I pumped with both my kids for 9 plus months each-to get them to a year mark.
I pumped 2x a day, always finding an vacated office on the floor. It would have been impossible for me to pump in my cube.
I kept my pump in the office under my desk and would only bring the cooler, bottles and tubes with me everyday, having washed and boiled them night before.
I keep the milk on my desk in the cooler. The ice pack stays cold throughout the day.
It was definitely a challenge sometimes and I wouldn't have it any other way. It is definitely perfectly doable, especially if you have your own office.

Re: Who pumps at work...
I pumped until a year. I had to do some very creative things to make it work and got walked in on more times than I can count .
\I hated it but in hindsight it was worth the trouble.

Re: Who pumps at work...
I've been pumping at work since Sept & in the beginning was doing it in the psychologists' office (& got walked in on 2x) & now I just do it in my classroom (w/ a piece of paper over the door window) that acts as a do not disturb sign. It's not too bad (I only have to do it 1x a day).
Thankfully my kids leave early so I can do it then. It's a pain dragging the pump back & forth every day.
In the beginning I always used the ice pack, lately I just have it in the insulated part of the bag, room temperature. It's been fine.
