who lives in Putnam/Westchester/Dutchess or vicinity....
and commutes to NYC? curious how long your commute is....I put in a few addresses of houses for sale to my job (W. 14th St) and most are an hour & a half or over 2 hours!
please tell me what town you live in, how long it takes you to get to NYC and if you regret moving north (I'm currently in Queens so "country" living might be a stretch...even though it's not "that" country in the counties I'm thinking of 
It's DH's dream to move further north and I was having thoughts of finishing our renovations and putting a big fat for sale sign up!

We live in Mahopac and DH worked in Manhattan for a few years - Columbus Circle area. It was 2 hours door to door. He eventually left his company for a job in White Plains now it's 45 minutes - an hour depending on traffic.
He never regrettred moving out here - he loves it. He really moved jobs for a better opportunity not the commute.

we don't own, we rent, but we live in pelham and love it. we moved here from astoria a few years ago and we've never looked back. if we stay in NY, we hope to always stay in westchester county. our train ride is 25 minutes to grand central. if you are looking in the area, you should definitely check out pelham, scarsdale, eastchester, bronxville, tuckahoe, white plains, new rochelle, etc.....since those are the lower parts of the county and easiest to commute to the city. good luck!!

I also live in Lower Westchester County, but it's not cheap. I live in a small co-op in a town with a bad school district. I saw your other post & you won't find what you are looking for here price wise.
I have a 35 minute train ride, but overall it is a 1 hour, 10 minute trip to the financial district. It was about the same to my old office in Chelsea.
So, you can't really go too much further north & keep your commute under 90 minutes.
I have friends in Croton, and it's about 45 minutes to Grand Central on an express. It is a little too far for me, but if you are closer to grand central its not bad. It is a really nice area & I think reasonably affordable (not sure about taxes.)
You might want to look into Rockland too. You have to take NJ transit though, which I think is a little less convenient, but doable.
ETA- Just to clarify, I meant Croton-on Hudson, near the Croton Harmon train station (Hudson line) which is different form Croton Falls on the Harlem line.)

thanks! I was looking at some Mahopac listings, there's some beautiful houses in the price range I was aiming for. 2 hours seems like more than I'd want to do each way, but honestly I take the A to work now and that's an hour, I'm sure I wouldn't mind it so much if there's peace & quiet on the train! lol

thank you! I'll check out some listings in those areas but I think they might be a bit pricey considering it's so much closer to the city (or we'd end up settling for a smaller home).

Technically *if* we were to sell our current house for $650K and purchase upstate for $350-$450K then we'd have about half the mortgage we currently do (since we have a good amount of equity built up)....which would help lessen the burden of the increase in property taxes.....I guess it's all a matter of balancing how much house/land we would like to have and dealing w/ a longer commute that would probably go along with it for that price range!

I lived in Dutchess while in college, and the train to the city from Poughkeepsie was about 2 hours, and then add on another 1/2 hour or so to my office from Penn. 5 hours a day SUCKED!

We just moved to Westchester, Rye Brook. DH said the commute was great yesterday-- and most of the express trains are 38 to 45 mins. Then another 10 mins or so to drive to the station and park. He works on 9th and Bway, and just takes the 6 down from GC.
We are only about 25 to 30 miles outside of Manhattan.

I'm in Rockland and taking the train into Hoboken and the PATH downtown takes an hour and 15 minutes on the express train door to door and an hour and 45 on the local train door to door.

your house is beautiful!! I love the neutral colors, the fireplace, the pool, pretty much everything (including that it seems like it could accommodate my mom as well). I'm definitely getting ahead of myself, but I would love to live upstate!! I used to go camping in Lake Carmel (I was a band geek who went to musters there every summer), so I have such nice memories in that area! thanks so much for the school district info!

thanks so much! We use the office for our mom's to visit for long stays, but we can't legally call it a bedroom because our septic is for 3 bedrooms. We used to have a queen bed in there with the office furniture, but we took it out because it really isn't a bedroom. We have our gym equipment in there now!! We live in New Rochelle, but DH takes the train from Mamaroneck and its about an hr. 20 minutes door to door, he's all the way on the West side, so not convenient to Grand Central - he walks it, but its not too bad.
