Who has a kid between 20-24 mos?

I need some help!

Inexplicably, I got a VERY part-time job teaching a toddler program at my kids' school...inexplicably, because I'm a certified HS teacher Chat Icon

There are about 7 kids in the class; two of them are 20 mos (Chat Icon !) and the rest are between 2 and 2.5. Now, my youngest kid is still 3/almost 4, so I am not that far removed from that age and from 2s programs, yet on the eve of the first class, I find myself unsure of what to expect.

I have the whole two hours planned from start to finish, but I have a couple of questions...
1. Are your kids able to sit in a circle for 10 minutes?
2. Would they be able to use a glue stick?
3. Listen to a story?
4. If they've been in a separation class, did they freak out if/when you left?
5. Any concept of the weather (I think not really, but my co-teacher thinks they might...)?

Thank you so much for any insight you can provide!!

Who has a kid between 20-24 mos?

My older DS is 3 but he was in the 2's room last year and they did a 10-15 min circle time starting in January. At the beginning of the year it was just a quick 5 min thing and they slowly progressed. I am not sure if the teachers did glue for them or they did it themselves. Story time was huge, and even my 18 month old is obsessed with stories. They also did a weather bear type thing in circle time. DS loved all of it and he learned so much. Good luck!

Who has a kid between 20-24 mos?

My DS is almost 3 but at 2 yes he could do all. He was never in a separation class so I can't help there. DS has been in daycare since 8 weeks so they use glue early on and sit in circle time from 12 months on.

My DS is obsessed with weather so he would def talk weather with you.

Re: Who has a kid between 20-24 mos?

For reference, my DD is 25 months, and her friends that I will be talking about are similar ages, basically a few months younger (20-24 months).

1. Are your kids able to sit in a circle for 10 minutes?

Yes, DD was able to do close to 20 minutes at a very young age. Her one friend was also able to also do long amounts of time. However her other friend, had zero attention span and can't sit through one picture book- so you might have some no's.

2. Would they be able to use a glue stick?

Maybe with help. Messily, yes.

3. Listen to a story?

Of course. Once again, most kids LOVE stories. I have one friend's kid who cannot, will not sit through it.

4. If they've been in a separation class, did they freak out if/when you left?

No experience with this but most will freak out for a couple of days and then be fine with this.

5. Any concept of the weather (I think not really, but my co-teacher thinks they might...)?

Yes, at 24 months my daughter said rain, rain drops and before that she knew moon, sun, hot, sunglasses. So I think if that is part of your routine all of the kids can start grasping weather concepts.

DD is 21 months.
1. Are your kids able to sit in a circle for 10 minutes? Yes, due to peer pressure. Wouldn't happen at home. Could get bored but does well with interaction, music, etc
2. Would they be able to use a glue stick? Yes. I am impressed with her gluing.
3. Listen to a story? Yes, definitely. She loves books/stories
4. If they've been in a separation class, did they freak out if/when you left? Rarely. She has her moments but has been I. Daycare since 5 months. Sometimes she takes some time to warm up maybe a few months.
5. Any concept of the weather (I think not really, but my co-teacher thinks they might...)? She says hot and cold. She understands sunny and rainy.

She is in a room up to 3 so I think a lot of the learning is a little advanced for her. She grasps what she can and has fun with the other kids. I'm so amazed by her. I just found out tonight she knows basic shapes. She knows all her colors. She tries to sing basic songs but you can't understand her but she likes it.

Guess I'm trying to say even if something is a little advanced she has fun with it

Thank you so much for any insight you can provide!!

my dd is 20 months old....

1. Are your kids able to sit in a circle for 10 minutes? yes, if she is entertained

2. Would they be able to use a glue stick? she will try, but it will be a mess and she would need supervision because she loves to put everything in her mouth. i would opt for crayons - dd likes to color

3. Listen to a story? yes; story time is her favorite

4. If they've been in a separation class, did they freak out if/when you left? not really sure what this means

5. Any concept of the weather (I think not really, but my co-teacher thinks they might...)? DD understands hot and cold, but not much else (rain, snow, sun etc)

Re: Who has a kid between 20-24 mos?

My DD is 20 mos. She has an older brother, learns very quickly, and is fiercely independent. I work full time, and my parents watche her full time.

1. Are your kids able to sit in a circle for 10 minutes?
No. She has no desire to sit still for anything, unless you bribe her with an ipad. She'll sit on my lap for maybe 2 minutes (i.e. contained).

2. Would they be able to use a glue stick?
Yes. She can hold a crayon and try to color, so I think she could use a glue stick. I'm very sure she can also EAT a glue stick. She also may try to brush her hair with the glue stick. She has long golden curls, so that's not fun for me.

3. Listen to a story?
Yes she can listen to a story. She's most engaged if you make silly faces, hysterical sounds, and tickle her. But I'm thinking the tickling might not be appropriate for a class setting. If you are holding a book, I have no doubt that she will want to "see see" and touch the book too. She's quite inquisitive.

4. If they've been in a separation class, did they freak out if/when you left?
I leave her every day, but with her grandparents. If I left her someplace new, she might freak out. But as long as she has her bunny, a pacifier, and someone to console her, she might be ok after a while.

5. Any concept of the weather (I think not really, but my co-teacher thinks they might...)?
Yes, kind of. She knows rain, hot, sun, windy, cold, snow, cloudy. She also tries to sing Rain, Rain, Go Away...

My DD has never been in a class room setting. She's wildly active, and at this age, any class I put her in, I'd have to shadow her the whole time. She's a runner, and will bounce from activity to activity. And she may also hug the other kids.

My DS at this age was completely different. So I can honestly say it really depends on the child and their disposition.

1. Are your kids able to sit in a circle for 10 minutes?
Yes, if he's entertained, but not all kids will. You will have to be ok with kids walking around.

2. Would they be able to use a glue stick?
Yes, but I think my DS is the exception. At his day care, they usually put glue on the page in lines and let the kids stick shapes on the paper.

3. Listen to a story?
Yes, same as 1.

4. If they've been in a separation class, did they freak out if/when you left?
DS is in day care. Took him about 1-2 weeks to adjust. Exoect crying at the beginning.

5. Any concept of the weather (I think not really, but my co-teacher thinks they might...)?
Not really.

Re: Who has a kid between 20-24 mos?

DS is 24 months.

1. Are your kids able to sit in a circle for 10 minutes?
Generally no ... not even if I'm sitting with him. I can maybe get 2 minutes out of him. But he's not in daycare - I think daycare kids might be better "trained" to sit.

2. Would they be able to use a glue stick?
Only with one-on-one assistance.

3. Listen to a story?
If it's a book he likes (generally anything with Elmo is a winner), he'll sit for hours. Otherwise, see my answer for #1.

4. If they've been in a separation class, did they freak out if/when you left?
He was in daycare for 3 months about a year ago and yes, he had separation anxiety, but nothing terrible. I think if these kids have all been in daycare for a while, you should be ok.

5. Any concept of the weather (I think not really, but my co-teacher thinks they might...)?
Basic concepts (hot, cold, raining), but not really. Nothing he wouldn't be able to pick up if you kept teaching it.

Ds is 19 months and in day care:

1. Are your kids able to sit in a circle for 10 minutes? Yes, if entertained or interested

2. Would they be able to use a glue stick? He uses glue alot in day care, so I think yes.

3. Listen to a story? YES.. he loves books and we read to him all the time. He will sit through many stories

4. If they've been in a separation class, did they freak out if/when you left? He has been in day care since 12 weeks. He has had is period of having bad separation anxiety when drop him off, especially the 2 times he moved to new rooms. But he got over it over time.

5. Any concept of the weather (I think not really, but my co-teacher thinks they might...)? I don't think so... mean he laughs when rain hits him in the face, but he loves water. But I don't think he really gets it otherwise.

My DD is 28 months - but she's been in day care for a while.

1. Are your kids able to sit in a circle for 10 minutes?

YES

2. Would they be able to use a glue stick? YES

3. Listen to a story? YES

4. If they've been in a separation class, did they freak out if/when you left?

Not now, but if I put her in at 20-24mm for the first time - she probably would have. She probably would have freaked out big time.

5. Any concept of the weather (I think not really, but my co-teacher thinks they might...)?

Kind of - understood rain. And temp difference - hot v. cold.

2. Would they be able to use a glue stick? Yes
3. Listen to a story? Yes
4. If they've been in a separation class, did they freak out if/when you left? Yes for 60 seconds

1. Are your kids able to sit in a circle for 10 minutes?
My dd is 27 months. I dont know how long circlr time is bit i know they do circle time everyday. They read a book. I know the teacher makes it a lot of fun. My fd will stay interested if you dont just read from the book. I know her teacher talks about what they see in the book. The teacher aska them to point to shapes, colors in the room. They point to friends and try to leaen names.

2. Would they be able to use a glue stick?
They have used reg glue for a sensory learninh thing. Not sure i think she coild use a glue stick.

3. Listen to a story?
Yes see above

4. If they've been in a separation class, did they freak out if/when you left?
She did the first 2 days and then was fine. Teachers are patient and kind. Have crayons and playdoh out on the desk before kids arrive. Some kids cry for months others no as per teacher.
5. Any concept of the weather (I think not really, but my co-teacher thinks they might...)?
My daughter does. She will know its sunny or its raining.

Thank you so much for any insight you can provide!!

4. If they've been in a separation class, did they freak out if/when you left? she sometimes freaks when i leave her at my MIL house. ( she is our nanny) but not every day.

5. Any concept of the weather (I think not really, but my co-teacher thinks they might...)? ummm kinda, if its rainy or really cold, but thats it.
