While your away......
what do you do with your pets? How do you handle being away from them?
DH and I are going to my hometown for Christmas and will be gone for 10 days. I don't want to bring them to a day care b/c I want them in their own home. The last time I brought them to a hotel, they were grief stricken for weeks. So, DH and I decided to leave them home (we have 3) and our friends are going to come by to visit, walk and feed them.
I just feel terrible knowing that they are going to be home all day with only a few visits inbetween.
Do you think I'm doing the right thing by leaving them home?
Normally I would bring them but, the airfare has gone up to $300 per pet RT. We can't spend 1K on that right now.

Re: While your away......
We just got back from 10 day trip. We leave kitty home and someone visits her every 3rd day.
It kind of sounds mean to leave her alone for that many days at a time, but I know that it's better for her that way then at someone else's house or at a boarding facility since she has such bad anxiety/people hating issues.
I know it's hard. I always feel horrible about it the whole trip.

Re: While your away......
Cats are easy because they are pretty independant and use the liter box so they don't need to be let out or walked. So when we go away I have someone come by every day just to visit, make sure the food and water bowls are filled and to make sure they are ok.
But honestly- I could probably get away with every other day...

Re: While your away......
We have a dog sitter that comes in four times a day. I checked out kennels but thought for our dog's temperament, he would be better off at home.
By the time we go on our next vacation, we will have two at home so I won't feel as sad, because they will have each other for company.
I had nightly phone calls with the dog sitter and she would tell me about their time together. She was really good at helping me through my separation anxiety.

We haven't done so yet but there are a few events where we will be out of town. Because I am petrified that our newest baby will think we are leaving her for good (she is a rescue) we have asked 2 friends to stay at our apartment for the length of our visit.

We always bring our dog with us when we go to NY. It's $100 each way which stinks... but we do it anyway.
If we're going somewhere besides NY, we usually will fly to JFK first (we live in CA) and then leave our dog with my parents - and fly from JFK.

What airline do you fly that only charges you $100.00 each way? I believe that it's gone up since then. I remember when it was 100. Jet Blue and Delta are currently charging 150 each way.

Re: While your away......
We board our dog at the vet. He LOVES it there! He gets constant attention, walked several times a day, plenty of other dogs to "talk" to. When we pick him up, the staff always tells us how happy he's been. I think he likes new places and new smells.

My sister or my cousin comes to feed/water/play with the cats and clean their litterbox.
I would trust my vet to board them, but knowing their personalities, I think they are happier at home.

Re: While your away......
IF we go to my brothers in Massachusetts Petunia will come with us in the car. If we go away for a vacation or an extended trip Petunia either will stay home and my sister will stay at my house for the week or she will stay at my parents house.

Re: While your away......
I have cats and I hire a pet sitter to come in 2x a day. She plays with them and feeds them, she also brings in our mail which is nice. Mine are definitely happier at home where they can roam around freely rather than being boarded.

We have a pet sitter who stays at our house when we vacation. We used to board her, but she always came back with some kind of injury so we decided to hire someone to stay at our house where Layla would be in her own environment.

Re: While your away......
I'm fortunate to have family around who is willing to help. Either my parents, my aunt or my brother will take care of my dog.
I don't want to leave her in a kennel or board her somewhere because I worry that she would be scared and confused. She isn't the best socialized dog, so I worry about her. But I know people do it all the time and their animals are fine.

Re: While your away......
I haven't had to leave him yet because we only have the pup for a few months. When it is possible he will come with us, when it isn't possible he will stay with my parents. He will be with them for the first time during Christmas vacation when we go to Canada. My parents are really looking forward to having him. He better be a good boy!

Their website says $100.00 each way but I think it went up to $150.00 but, I can't be sure.
Regardless of the money, I'd rather leave them at their home instead of putting them on a 6 hour flight in a bag and stress them out. They have traveled with us before and I stress out more then they do. They never sleep and pant heavily the entire trip. I won't give them a sedative b/c of the side affects of them having even more difficulty breathing. BUT< I feel guilty leaving them home too!!!

Re: While your away......
We try to take her with us but when we can't we board her at a place that also does doggie day care. During the day she gets to play with the other dogs and at night she has her own little room! We bring her bed from home. We hate leaving her but this seems to be the best thing for her when we have to.

Re: While your away......
We will only be gone one day for Christmas, but Bowie will be staying with my parents.
The cats will be fine overnight for one night.
If we were going to be gone for a long period of time, I'd probably board the dog and have someone come once a day to feed the cats and clean out the litterbox.

Re: While your away......
My parents have 2 cats and they go away for 10 days every October. They have a family friend who stops by every day to feed them, make sure they have fresh water, and change the litter box (when needed). I stop by every other day just to hang with them when I can. I wish I could go everday but I live far away and it's hard for me to get there with work and caring for a 14 month old.

Re: While your away......
We used to have my sister stay at our house with Misty when we went away. It wasn't terrible, but because of her seperation anxiety, she would get diarrhea and my sister was coming home every day to a nervous dog and a pile of poo. We decided to try a local boarder and it has worked amazingly! She loves that she has other dogs to play with, has humans around for most of the day (they are breeders and the wife is home) and she isn't at home and so aware of the fact that we aren't around at all. So, from here on in - any long trips, she goes to the kennel.
