where is your thermostat?
ok- so we're having cetral AC installed. we didn't have any ductwork or vents, so they added all of that (we have baseboard heat). Now they are asking where we want the thermostat. We were hoping to put the new thermostat where our heat thermostat is (just replace the heat thermostat).... BUT they put some of the AC vents right near there, so i'm not sure if its the best idea to leave it there if the vents are going to be blowing on it??? they said the best place would be near the return duct, but theres not a great spot on the wall to put it there... anybody else have the thermostat near the AC vents? any problems with doing it that way??

Re: where is your thermostat?
Ours is in the hallway but it's close to our kitchen so our bedroom is always freezing, DH wants to move it further down closer to our bedroom

Re: where is your thermostat?
Why wouldn't they replace the heat only thermostat with a heat/AC one? That makes the most logical sense.
Our new ones are close to the return vents, I guess since the wiring is easier. Why run 50 feet of wire, when you can run 5, at least for the AC. The furnace is in the basement, so there's a long run for that no matter where the thermostats are.

yeah... it does. the AC guys were just worried that where the heat only one is, is near the new AC vents that they just put in. with the cold air blowing right near the thermostat, they were saying it might throw off the temps in the rest of the rooms in the house....

So, move the thermostat for heat and AC over 5 feet in either direction, and away from the direct airflow.... *I* would definitely want one thermostat for both.

Re: where is your thermostat?
Ours is near our kitchen which is NOT good since the stove heats up the whole area.

yeah... see thats hard, too because of the way the house is set up. Heres a pic ( don't mind the UGLY paneling!!) you can see the thermostat hanging (they are starting to work on it). you can see the 2 vents in the ceiling, and there is a doorway on either side. to the right of the right hand doorway is a little more wall, and then the entryway. so its hard to move it just a little bit. I think we'll just have them put it here, and we cna always move it in the future if its a problem.

Re: where is your thermostat?
Ahh... that explains a lot.... It shouldn't be that bad where it currently is. As long as the vents are not pointing towards the wall (they should be pointing towards the center of the room), the draft won't hit the thermostat directly.
Any house with multiple rooms will have different temps, so there is no "perfect" place to put the thermostat, since one room will be warmer or colder than another.
I think leaving it where it is should be just fine.

Re: where is your thermostat?
It should not be by any supply vents......it will definitely throw off the temp of the system. I would have them put it by the return........I work in the business and that's the "right" way to install.
