Re: Where did you get your inspiration?
EVERYWHERE I love this stuff so I eye every place I go into for ideas, I watch HGTV, I notice it in catalogues, etc. And then just places - like we know for sure our master in the new house will be in the colors of Big Island HI. While I was there 2.5 years ago I kept saying "one day, my bedroom is going to reflect these colors". Fingers crossed that come late July / early August I'll finally be able to do it.
It's something that takes time and a keen eye, IMO. Just start paying attention as you go along and things will really start popping out at you - stuff you NEVER would have noticed before.
Good luck and congrats on the new house!

I too have used Hawaii as my theme, but I think I went too far...
For my bedroom in my parents home I thought it would be an awesome idea to paint a palm tree in the corner of my room and have the branches extend up onto the ceiling so I could sleep under a palm tree every night. I even took the theme a little further and bought a hibiscus flower comforter and hung grass skirts as my valence over my windows. I also painted my ceiling blue and painted white puffy clouds. I wanted sand on the floor but thats where my parents put their foot down.
I tried to scrub the palm tree off the walls, but it just wont come off. I guess my parents will "cut the palm tree down"and paint over it.
I should have done what you are doing...use the colors of the islands and not try to replicate the island in my bedroom lol, but hey thats what we do when we are kids right?

Re: Where did you get your inspiration?
hgtv.com decorpad.com pottery barn RH overstock.com homedecorators.com and here ! Ill look all over, fall in love with a piece and search for it (the cheapest price i can find) and go from there.
A painting i purchased on my honeymoon was my bathroom inspiration.
Really it comes from all over the place, I am doing my GR now, and i saw curtains that i loved- loved- loved, so i am doing the room around these curtains, i kid you not.
Have fun with it, there is nothing that a new can of paint or some duck tape cant fix

Re: Where did you get your inspiration?
I knew that I didn't want a modern look because I do not like the furniture/look of modern homes (sorry if any of you do, just my personal opinion!). I wanted something traditional and NOT old-fashioned....my thoughts were that this look would last forever and I wouldn't have anythign trendy that I'd hate in 5 years.

Re: Where did you get your inspiration?
Our HM, Google Image (super helpful), HGTV (TV shows mostly), decorating mags, decor blogs.
The best thing I ever did - was find inspiration rooms - for instance - our bedroom - I google imaged "blue master bedroom" and BAM, found a room almost identical to ours that I LOVED. So I'm mimicking it.
Google Image is my bestest friend.

Re: Where did you get your inspiration?
well i hope our house will be like our apartment - just bigger and better
most of my ideas come from pottery barn/crate and barrel - although crate and barrel is a little too modern for my taste sometimes...i always save stuff from their magazines that i like - and every once in awhile we go to the stores and look at the way they have things displayed...
i cant wait to own a home b/c i have SO MANY ideas!

Re: Where did you get your inspiration?
Really everywhere. Ever since we started looking for a house and bought a house, I was looking everwhere. Going into stores, catalogs, etc. I would cut thing out or save the catalog to refer back to. Cutting things out is easier though. Keep it in a binder or folder to refer back to.
I love HGTV, decorators magazines (I just bought three yesterday), online searches, this board, furniture stores. I think you just start to see things in a different light once you are ready to buy a house. You notice things in other peoples homes that I would have never noticed before buying a home. You notice things in stores or on vacation. Colors you fall in love with. I really enjoy decorating my home.

Re: Where did you get your inspiration?
thanks for the thread!
Well I have decided that our bedroom was going to be centered around our comforter since I love it so much. Unfortunately the pic that came with the comforter wasnt very inspiring.
I am at a loss for my living room though. All the other rooms I know how I want to decorate and what colors, but for some reason i cannot find a living room I want!!

Your welcome!
So what does your comforter look like? Maybe we can give you some ideas.
For your LR, what style is the rest of your house? What look or feel do you want for you LR? Have you looked on Rate My Space. They always have good pics. Search on the 5 star ones.

Re: Where did you get your inspiration?
We are in the process of looking to buy a home ,once we sell this apartment. So I get many of my ideas from other homes on MLS website. As i look through all of the houses if i see any decorating ideas i like i save their picture to a folder i created! So I am stealing other's ideas. LOL
