When you say something stupid

and you realized how stupid it was after the conversation ended, do you let it go- or do you go back to the person and correct yourself?

I just said the stupidiest thing in front of one of the junior partners in my office. I did say I was wrong- but replaying it in my head- I realize what an idiot I sounded like. Its not insulting or insensitive (at least not to the person I said it to), but jeeze, I feel like such an idiot.

ETA: Well here is the situation. A co-worker's mom passed away. Another co-worker was telling me the story. She was young. I said it was so terrible- she was so young and had just retired- but is there any a good time? And he said, something like well- when you are 95- I said of course you're right. But I didn't mean at an age- I meant right after retiring. I just feel like an idiot

Depending on the situation, I might just drop an e-mail to apologize for whatever was said. It really depends on the situation though.

Just let it go.
If it was someone I'm close with, I usually make a joke out of it an hour later

I don't think what you said was stupid. Definitely sucks to work your whole life & die before you get to enjoy.

To answer your question - I go back & correct myself.

I don't think you said anything stupid or wrong at all.

I think the person who "Well, when you're 95" was the one who said something stupid, personally.

Just let it go.
