when to give your notice
I know that I am leaving the co that I work for now by the end of this year. Sooner if I can find something else before then. Anyway the co that I am with now is extremly busy in dec and Jan. so I'm wondering if I should give them my notice soon...so that I'm not screwing them com Dec....or burning my bridges.
what do you think?

Hey Danielle!
If you have had a good experience w/ them then be nice enough to give them a longer notice. I would say maybe November.

Re: when to give your notice
Noooooooooooo way!!! I've had friends give 2 weeks because they were leaving for another job and they've been told to leave immediately. I wouldn't give them more than 2-3 weeks notice. I understand you're trying to be nice but you have to remember that they will then start looking for someone to fill your position. If they find someone, you're out, regardless of how 'nice' you were.

Re: when to give your notice
you know your company better. In mine you can give your notice months in advance and they don't let you go prior, it's easer for them to take their time to recruit.

Re: when to give your notice
I would not give notice until you had another job lined up, and signed the papers. My sister gave notice on a job for something else, and then it fell through and she was left with no job.
I think 2 weeks is standard, 3 is very curteous, 4 is extremely generous!

I have to admit that this is a fear of mine....but it takes months to train someone to do this job.

If you will definitely be leaving by year end whether you have a new job or not, I would give them a month's notice.

I respect your integrity - that you don't want to leave them without a properly trained replacement, especially given some of the things you have said about your workplace. I have to agree with Eileen on this one. I think having only one person knowing how to do your job is a sign of poor management - no one should be indispensible. So if they have not given you help and not had at least one other person to train, that is their own fault, IMO.

Re: when to give your notice
don't say anything - -this is business - -you have to do what's in your best interest, as the company would do what's in theirs
if they were going to lay you off, they wouldn't hold off because "the timing wasn't convenient"

Re: when to give your notice
give your two weeks, that's it. By law, you are not required to give any at all.
They can let you go today without any warning, it is their legal right ... so really two weeks is generous (and good business practice).
Part of doing business is hiring and training employees, they'll survive.

Honestly that shouldn't be your worry, it's theirs and that's not really good management style.
Good luck and give your notice when you have something already lined up
